Job Description

Emergency Lighting Specialist — Design, Survey & Commissioning

Department: M&E - Pre-construction

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: London

Harmony is on a mission to be the best life safety partner to work with and for. Rated an ‘Outstanding Employer’ by Best Companies in 2025, we are only getting bigger and stronger — and we’re looking for A-players to help us get there.

We are passionate about making a difference and obsessed with quality. Our goal is to build a world where every resident can sleep safely at night, knowing their home is 100% safe.

Every established lighting manufacturer and supplier offers design as a standard part of their service. Until now, Harmony hasn’t — which has put us at a disadvantage before the conversation even starts. We are changing that. Through Auro Lume, our emergency lighting brand, we are bringing this capability fully in-house, and we are looking for an Emergency Lighting Specialist to own it.

You will enter the sales cycle early alongside our clients and their consultants — surveying sites, designing compliant emergency lighting schemes, producing lux calculations and layouts, writing specifications, and commissioning installations to a world-class standard. This is a newly created role that gives Harmony a genuine technical consultancy capability in emergency lighting, and the person who takes it will become our in-house authority on the subject.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out detailed surveys of client sites to assess existing emergency lighting provision, identify gaps, and define scope for new or replacement schemes.
  • Design compliant emergency lighting systems — producing lux calculations, layout drawings, and specifications that meet BS 5266 and relevant standards.
  • Produce clear, professional design packages and reports for clients, consultants, and specifiers — supporting Harmony’s entry into the design and specification conversation at the earliest stage.
  • Commission emergency lighting installations to a world-class standard, producing full certification and compliance evidence in line with BS 5266.
  • Act as Harmony’s in-house technical authority on emergency lighting — supporting the sales and pre-construction teams with technical queries, product selection, and compliance guidance.
  • Build relationships with clients, consultants, and specifiers — positioning Auro Lume and Harmony as the first-choice partner for emergency lighting design and delivery.
  • Support the pre-construction and estimating teams with accurate scope definition, design input, and technical sign-off on emergency lighting elements.
  • Keep abreast of changes to relevant standards, products, and technologies, bringing ideas that improve the quality and efficiency of our emergency lighting offering.
  • Maintain accurate records of all surveys, designs, commissions, and certification documentation.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • An A-player mindset — high standards, extreme ownership and the drive to do things properly, the first time.
  • Proven experience in emergency lighting design, survey, and commissioning — with a solid track record of delivering compliant schemes across commercial, residential, or public sector buildings.
  • Strong working knowledge of BS 5266 and the wider regulatory framework for emergency lighting in the UK.
  • Proficient in lighting design software — able to produce accurate lux calculations and compliant layout drawings.
  • Comfortable in a client-facing, pre-construction role — able to present designs, discuss specifications, and represent Harmony credibly with consultants and building owners.
  • Organised and detail-oriented — able to manage multiple live surveys, designs, and commissions simultaneously.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 and comfortable producing professional reports and documentation.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Relevant electrical or lighting qualification (e.g. City & Guilds 2391, ILP, or equivalent) (preferable).
Nice to Have
  • Experience working within a fire safety, M&E, or building services environment.
  • Familiarity with emergency lighting product ranges and manufacturers.
  • Experience supporting tender submissions or working alongside estimating and pre construction teams.

Job Benefits

This is a chance to take ownership of a brand-new capability at one of the UK’s fastest-growing fire safety specialists — becoming Harmony’s in-house emergency lighting authority, shaping how we design and deliver Auro Lume schemes, and entering the conversation with clients far earlier than we ever have before. At Harmony, we ask a lot — and we give a lot back. The hours are real, the standards are high and the work is demanding, but for those who show up, deliver and go the extra mile, the rewards follow. A-players here enjoy a competitive salary, a Personal Development Plan with ongoing training and mentoring, unlimited holiday, a bonus scheme paying up to 50% of annual salary, private medical insurance, enhanced maternity and paternity, lunch, snacks and refreshments on us every day (fresh fruit and Takeaway Friday included), a team social budget, cycle to work, an auto-enrolment pension, two major company events a year and our Reward and Recognition scheme — including European mini-breaks for those who go above and beyond. It is a collaborative, high-energy environment focused on doing things the right way — and none of it is a perk for showing up; it’s what we share with the people pulling the business forward.

Harmony is an equal opportunity employer. We consider all applicants for employment regardless of age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, family or parental status, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion or belief. We want everyone who works with us to feel valued and to make a difference.
