Job Description

As an Emergency Department Technician you will perform routine patient/resident care. Recognize and report significant observations. Strive for a variety of opportunities to use clinical skills, offer patient/family teaching and participate in a multidisciplinary approach to care.
Responsibilities:

  • Explains Hospital policies regarding admission, discharge, visiting, smoking, valuables, etc. to patients and their families
  • Assists with dressing/undressing patients, helping patients on/off stretchers and beds
  • Measures and records basic vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and weight. Reports abnormalities immediately to the RN
  • Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer of patients
  • Responds to patient call light
  • Adheres to patient safety procedures including those related to patient identification, restraints, seizure, fall prevention, and one to one observation.
  • Assists patient with hygiene and comfort activities including bathing (complete and partial bath), grooming, personal care, and skin care.
  • Sets up patients for meals. When necessary, feeds patient and records calorie count and patient’s intake on appropriate sheets.
  • Perform finger sticks using appropriate aseptic technique, utilizing glucose meter and report results to the nurse
  • Assists with NG tube feeding by setting up and monitoring drip rate, records patient’s intake on appropriate sheets. Distributes and serves ice water
  • Maintains airway clearance by oral suction. Operates wall suction units. May be required to perform Heimlich maneuver
  • Assists patients with elimination functions including foley care, incontinence care, enemas, and colostomy/ileo bag changes with mature stomas. Gives out and empties bed pans and urinals
  • Measures and records intake and output. Empties and records drainage from Hemovac, Foley, Jackson Pratts, and Gastric suctions
  • Collects urine, stool, and sputum samples.
  • Assists with maintaining skin integrity by turning and positioning patients
  • Assists patients with positioning, transfers, and passive range of motion as assigned
  • Ambulates patients using assistive devices such as cane, walker, crutch, etc
  • Transfers patients using ARJO equipment and EZ Slide
  • Performs simple dressing checks and changes. Applies or adjusts patient care devices such as cold packs, hearing aids, immobilizers, and sequential compression stockings as directed by RN
  • Performs post-mortem care
  • Makes occupied and unoccupied beds
  • Removes soiled linens from work area and patient rooms
  • Responds to requests for information, directs calls, or takes messages
  • Adheres to Universal Blood and Body Fluid Precautions by: Prepare patients and belongings for transfer to other areas of the hospital
  • Performs the following patient care activities as assigned by the RN using proper body mechanics: Turns and positions patients who are bedridden. Obtains patient’s weight using stand up scale, bed scale, or chair scale. Ambulates patients as allowed using appropriate assistive devices such as cane, walker, and crutches. Transports and moves patients using a wheelchair or stretcher. Performs transfer techniques including one worker, two worker transfers, and stand pivot. Cares for old colostomy-application of appliance, stoma/skin care. Cares for old ileostomy-application of appliance, stoma/skin care. Administers enemas, as assigned
  • Maintains safety and comfort interventions on patient in vest or wrist restraints. Observes patient every 30 minutes and documents observation on the flow sheet. Release restraints every two hours and allow for activity as ordered (ie: range of motion, toileting, and ambulation)
  • Maintains one-to-one observation as assigned on patients who are identified as having the potential to harm themselves. Reports observations to the nurse
  • Actively participates in the fall prevention program to protect patients from falls and injury. Interventions include: Maintain bed in lowest position with side raids raised as necessary. Assists patient with ambulation, transferring and toileting. Keep call bell within reach of the patient
  • Appropriate use of bed mattress and chair alarms
  • Assists the RN/MD with sterile procedures, ie: setting up sterile field, application of sterile dressing
  • Performs CPR
  • Perform 12 lead EKG on portable machine and Dash monitors, with data entry and transmission. Replace EKG Paper as necessary in run off machine and EKG machine
  • Performs related duties as required. All responsibilities noted here are considered essential functions of the job under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Duties not mentioned here, but considered related are not essential functions.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent required

  • 1-2 years of ED experience preferred, OR EKG and Phlebotomy Certification from an accredited training program OR EMT/Paramedic Training.

  • Phlebotomy experience, required
