Job Description

Under the supervision of a RN, the Emergency Department Technician works cooperatively with all team members to provide technical patient care services. The Emergency Department Technician assists nurses and physicians in the performance of their functions. The Emergency Department Technician is responsible for adhering to all standards of care and for promoting teamwork among coworkers.

Core Competencies

  • Collects, documents and ensures the data related to the health status of patients is communicated to the RN/MD and any changes that occur as soon as possible.

  • Performs tasks/procedures as directed: Connects patients to bedside monitors, completes and orders 12 lead EKG's to be read by ED provider, collects and records Intake and Output. collects specimens for and completes point of care testing, completes quality control validation on all devices after appropriate validation.

  • Recognizes abnormal findings from assessment and reports them immediately to ED provider, including but not limited to: Vital signs that are outside the normal range for age of the patient, deformities and swelling, changes in orientation status, acute changes in breathing patterns and/or pulse oximetry.

  • Assists ED Provider with bedside procedures such as but not limited to Chest Tube insertion, Lumbar Puncture, Suturing, Splinting.

  • Provides health care services in own job category to the following age groups as applicable to job functions and as appropriate in regularly assigned clinical areas: Infancy: birth - 1 year Toddler: 1 year - 3 years Pre-School: 3 years - 6 years School Age: 6 years - 12 years Adolescent: 12 years - 18 years Adulthood: 19 years - 64 years Older Adult: 65 years >

  • Applies warm and cold compresses of injured sites with communication and direction from provider or RN.

  • Performs first aid care such as cleaning and irrigating wounds with saline and applying appropriate dressings to wounds.

  • Sets up and prepares patients for sterile procedures.

  • Applies external urine collection devices for male or female anatomy and collects and documents description and amount of urine collected.

  • Obtains the appropriate size crutches for patients height and ensures the proper use of crutches by observing return demonstration of use

  • Applies slings, ace wraps, splints and other orthopedic devices under direction of the physician and informs RN/MD patient is ready for reevaluation.

  • Assists ambulating to and from bathroom or other areas of the hospital. Uses assistive devices to prevent falls (wheelchairs, walkers, other devices) as needed.

  • Tests visual acuity with or without correction and documents appropriately.

  • Changes the connection, under the direction of a licensed professional, of oxygen from wall unit and beck to enable patients to be transferred as needed.

  • Uses BVM for respiratory failure, delivers CPR for cardiac arrest and responds with physicians to inpatient code blues.

  • Provides assistance in the management of combative and potentially dangerous patients and/or visitors, by initiating verbal de-escalation and practicing nonaggressive defensive techniques to prevent injury. Assist with the application of restraints for combative individuals when all other interventions fail to provide safety for the patient and staff.

  • Verifies and documents all patient belongs with patient, or family if present, before any transfer or admission.

  • Verbalizes and receives reports from on going or off going tech regarding patient care, pending procedures or tasks that need to be completed ay any change or transfer of assignment.

  • Orients patients to room, and provides patient with a call light and confirms their understanding of the use and expectation of response time, ensures side rails are up and gurneys are in locked position except when transporting for patient safety.

  • Ensures the unit if free of clutter and/or potential hazardous conditions. Complies with patient safety centered interventions/bundles such as fall and pressure injury prevention.

  • Adheres to the hand hygiene, isolation and infection prevention policies.

  • Complies with Joint Commission’s national patient safety goals
