Job Description

OF POSITION:

  • To provide the basic skills necessary for collection of blood samples through the use of skin puncture and venipuncture techniques.
  • The employee in this position will be cross-trained to perform other duties in the emergency department, including, but, may not be limited to, EKGs and simple patient transports.

SUPERVISION: Reports directly to Nurse Manager and/or Charge Nurse

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Performs blood collection procedures through the use of skin puncture and venipuncture techniques.
  • Performs other duties in the emergency department, including, but, may not be limited to, EKGs and simple patient transports when needed.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • One year experience as a hospital phlebotomist or graduate from Phlebotomy school.
  • Basic computer skills; basic mathematic skills.
  • National certification preferred.
  • Basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology and an in depth knowledge of specimen collection tools and techniques.
  • Phlebotomists are able to approach, communicate and positively interact with patients and other health care professionals while performing their duties, which may also involve stressful situations.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
