About ARH Canberra

ARH Canberra is a purpose-built multidisciplinary referral hospital. Our state-of-the-art Emergency & Critical Care unit operates alongside specialist services in surgery, internal medicine, oncology, orthopaedics, rehabilitation, and behaviour giving you the resources, specialist back-up, and advanced technology to deliver outstanding emergency care.

The Role

As an Emergency & Critical Care Veterinarian, you will work at the forefront of after-hours and emergency medicine triaging and stabilising critically ill patients, managing complex cases, and liaising with specialist colleagues to optimise outcomes. Flexible rostering is available, including week-on/week-off schedules.

Key Responsibilities

  • Triage, stabilise and manage emergency and critically ill patients
  • Perform emergency procedures including resuscitation, thoracocentesis, catheter placement, and emergency anaesthesia
  • Oversee ICU patients, monitor, reassess and adjust care plans with precision
  • Collaborate with on-call specialists to ensure appropriate escalation and continuity of care
  • Communicate effectively with distressed clients under time-sensitive conditions
  • Contribute to ECC case reviews, team debriefs, and clinical education initiatives

About You

  • Registered (or eligible for registration) as a veterinarian in the ACT
  • 2+ years post-graduate experience with meaningful emergency and critical care exposure
  • Calm under pressure with strong clinical decision-making in high-acuity scenarios
  • Confident performing emergency procedures with a methodical, evidence-based approach
  • A clear, empathetic communicator — able to guide families through stressful situations
  • Team-oriented, curious, and committed to continuous professional growth

Clinical Facilities & Technology

  • Full in-house laboratory (CBC, biochemistry, blood gas, coagulation, SediVue)
  • Advanced imaging: digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, 64-slice CT, and high-field MRI
  • Three surgical suites available for emergency procedures
  • IDEXX Extended Internal Medicine Specialist Consultation Services (after hours)
  • Dedicated multidisciplinary specialist teams for rapid input
