The Emergency Crisis Services Psychiatrist provides timely psychiatric assessment, crisis intervention, and treatment recommendations for patients presenting to the Emergency Department and other acute care settings with behavioral health and substance use concerns. Working closely with emergency medicine providers, behavioral health clinicians, hospital staff, and community partners, this role helps ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered psychiatric care during periods of crisis while supporting appropriate disposition and transitions of care.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, this position will play a key role in supporting psychiatric education and physician development through participation in the Indiana University School of Medicine Psychiatry Residency Program, including the clinical supervision and training of residents as part of an eight-resident psychiatry residency program launching in July 2027.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform psychiatric evaluations and risk assessments for patients presenting in behavioral health crisis.
  • Provide consultation and treatment recommendations to emergency medicine and hospital-based providers.
  • Support disposition planning, including inpatient admission, outpatient follow-up, and community resource coordination.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe and efficient behavioral health care delivery.
  • Assist with quality improvement, emergency psychiatry program development, and clinical excellence initiatives.
  • Participate in resident education, supervision, and academic activities associated with the IU School of Medicine Psychiatry Residency Program.
This is an excellent opportunity for a psychiatrist interested in emergency psychiatry, teaching, program development, and advancing behavioral health services within a growing academic health system.
