Job Description
Job Duties
- Lead and mentor a team of embedded software engineers, providing technical direction, code review, and hands-on contribution to embedded firmware projects
- Manage day-to-day team operations including sprint planning, task prioritization, workload balancing, and performance feedback
- Personally design, develop, test, and debug embedded C/C++ applications, device drivers, and bootloaders for mission-critical power electronics hardware
- Architect and implement real-time embedded software using RTOS-based platforms and industrial communication protocols (e.g., CAN-based networking stacks)
- Guide development across multiple microcontroller architectures, including 8-bit and 32-bit space-grade and radiation-tolerant processors
- Oversee development of supporting software tools (primarily Python, with some JavaScript/HTML/CSS) used for verification testing, production testing, and customer-facing integration support
- Contribute to and guide development of desktop application tooling (e.g., Electron-based applications with database-backed data recording) supporting test and production workflows
- Support development of new software components intended to ease customer/partner integration efforts, including exploration of modern systems languages as appropriate
- Own department-level technical documentation: software requirements, architecture and design documents, verification and test plans/reports, and process/quality documentation appropriate for a regulated hardware/aerospace environment
- Develop and maintain department schedules, staffing plans, and technical roadmaps in coordination with cross-functional stakeholders (hardware, systems, product, quality)
- Manage software configuration control, coding standards, and development best practices across the team
- Recruit, onboard, and mentor engineers and interns; manage a recurring internship program
- Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, mechanical, systems, and quality engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle
- Interface with customers on technical integration topics as needed
- Manage tasks and documentation using standard engineering tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence, Microsoft Office suite)
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a similar technical field
- Minimum of 5 years of experience leading or managing an embedded software engineering team
- Significant professional experience in embedded software development in C/C++, including driver and/or bootloader development
- Professional experience developing tools or utilities in Python
- Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) in embedded applications
- Experience with embedded communication protocols/networking stacks common in industrial or aerospace applications
- Hands-on experience with embedded development toolchains, including cross-compilers, build systems (e.g., CMake), and hardware debug tools (e.g., JTAG/SWD debug probes)
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle practices in a regulated, quality-driven, or safety-critical industry
- Demonstrated ability to produce clear technical documentation (requirements, design documents, test plans/reports)
- Experience working with version control and issue-tracking systems
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally
- This is an on-site position
Desired Qualifications
- Experience developing embedded software for space, aerospace, or other high-reliability/mission-critical hardware
- Familiarity with multiple microcontroller architectures and platforms, including transitioning code between 8-bit and 32-bit targets
- Experience developing test tools, utilities, or applications using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
- Experience with desktop application development frameworks (e.g., Electron) and database-backed data logging/recording systems
- Exposure to Rust or interest in expanding into modern systems programming languages
- Experience supporting production test, verification, or integration efforts with internal or external customers
- Familiarity with configuration/quality management practices common in aerospace or other regulated industries (e.g., AS9100, NASA/ESA standards, or similar)
- Experience managing or growing an internship or early-career mentorship program
- Experience with Agile or similar development methodologies in a hardware-adjacent environment
