Embedded Software Engineer

Your Impact

You will be working on sophisticated, industrial, real-time systems involving embedded Linux platforms, industrial communications, data acquisition, and desktop software applications. This team of engineers develops innovative monitoring systems used for Grid Monitoring, Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), Generation, and other critical electrical infrastructure applications.

As an Embedded Software Engineer, you will contribute to the design, development, and support of software used within industry-leading monitoring and diagnostic products. Working closely with Systems, Hardware, Test, Firmware, and Product Management teams, you will develop software spanning embedded Linux platforms, edge applications, industrial communications, desktop software, and engineering tools.

You will contribute throughout the product lifecycle, from requirements analysis and implementation through testing, integration, release, and sustaining engineering. Leveraging modern software engineering practices, including AI-assisted development and automation tools where appropriate, you will help deliver secure, reliable, and maintainable software solutions for critical electrical infrastructure around the world.

Here’s where you’ll demonstrate your proficiencies:

  • Design, develop, maintain, and debug software for embedded Linux platforms and desktop applications.
  • Develop high-quality software solutions using C++, C#, Python, or similar technologies.
  • Develop Linux-based applications, services, communications software, and data processing components.
  • Develop desktop applications, configuration utilities, diagnostic tools, and user interfaces.
  • Implement and maintain industrial communications protocols including IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870, MQTT, and related technologies.
  • Develop software for data acquisition, diagnostics, analytics, communications, event processing, and product configuration.
  • Support integration across embedded devices, networking infrastructure, desktop applications, and cloud-connected services.
  • Work closely with Systems, Hardware, Firmware, Software, and Test Engineers to deliver integrated product solutions.
  • Perform debugging, root-cause analysis, troubleshooting, and performance optimisation of software systems.
  • Develop and execute unit, integration, and system-level testing activities.
  • Support software configuration management, traceability, and release activities.
  • Contribute to cybersecurity, compliance, and product quality initiatives.
  • Utilise modern automation and AI-assisted engineering tools to improve productivity and software quality.
  • Participate in Agile Scrum teams to support efficient product delivery and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 2–5 years of industry experience developing embedded software, Linux applications, desktop software, or industrial software products.
  • Strong proficiency in C++ and modern software development practices.
  • Experience developing applications and services on Linux-based systems.
  • Experience developing desktop applications using C#, .NET, Qt, Java, or similar technologies.
  • Understanding of software architecture, object-oriented design, software design patterns, and software lifecycle management.
  • Experience with multithreaded applications, networking, and inter-process communications.
  • Experience developing software for data acquisition, communications, diagnostics, monitoring, or control applications.
  • Experience developing or supporting industrial communication protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870, MQTT, or similar.
  • Experience with software debugging, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
  • Experience using version control tools such as Git.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and technical communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a cross-functional engineering team.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience developing products for the electrical power, utility, industrial automation, monitoring, or critical infrastructure sectors.
  • Experience with Embedded Linux distributions such as Yocto, Buildroot, or Debian-based environments.
  • Experience with desktop UI frameworks such as Qt, WPF, WinForms, Blazor, or web-based technologies.
  • Experience with Ethernet networking, managed switches, PTP, NTP, or SCADA connectivity.
  • Experience troubleshooting communications using tools such as Wireshark.
  • Experience with Digital Fault Recording (DFR), Power Quality (PQ), PMU, transformer monitoring, partial discharge monitoring, or related power system applications.
  • Experience with databases, REST APIs, telemetry systems, or modern connectivity frameworks.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity principles and secure software development practices.
  • Knowledge of software testing, automated test frameworks, CI/CD, and software quality processes.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted software development tools and techniques.
  • Experience using JIRA, Confluence, and Agile Scrum methodologies.
