Job Description

The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.
This role sits directly at the intersection of hardware and software, where embedded code not only runs systems, it moves steel, powers motors, reads real-world sensors, and controls massive tunneling machines operating in extreme environments. Everything we build is developed and manufactured entirely in the United States.
If you’re excited by low-level systems, real-world impact, and seeing your code control physical machines, this is a rare opportunity.
Responsibilities
  • Write robust, production-grade C++ for embedded Linux systems that monitor and control tunneling and mining equipment.
  • Work hands-on with real hardware: integrating sensors, power electronics, and control systems.
  • Design safety-critical software that operates reliably in harsh, industrial environments.
  • Develop and execute test suites for verification and validation of embedded systems.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and controls engineers to bring complex machines to life.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Professional experience developing software with C/C++

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Strong collaborator with experience working across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and system-level thinking.
  • Experience with embedded software for industrial automation or mechatronic systems.
  • Experience with embedded software in automotive systems.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Deep expertise in modern C++.
  • Strong working knowledge of Git.
  • Proficiency with Linux-based operating systems.
  • Experience with sensor integration and DAQ optimization.

CultureWe're a team of dedicated, smart, and scrappy people. Our employees are passionate about our mission and determined to innovate at every opportunity.
Benefits We offer employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 401(k) plan, paid holidays, paid vacation, and a competitive amount of equity for all permanent employees.

About The Boring Company

To solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic, roads must go 3D, which means either flying cars or tunnels. Unlike flying cars, tunnels are weatherproof, out of sight and won't fall on your head. A large network of tunnels many levels deep would fix congestion in any city, no matter how large it grew (just keep adding levels). The key to making this work is increasing tunneling speed and dropping costs by a factor of 10 or more – this is the goal of The Boring Company. Fast to dig, low cost tunnels would also make Hyperloop adoption viable and enable rapid transit across densely populated regions, enabling travel from New York to Washington DC in less than 30 minutes.
