Job Description

What to Expect

The Service Tooling Engineering team designs, builds, and ships custom service and commissioning tools that support rapid development and maintenance of Tesla’s energy storage and charging products. This intern will help advance that work by developing firmware and automation for discharge and charge equipment, implementing low-voltage communication stacks, building safe and reliable control software, and integrating embedded systems with tooling hardware from prototype through production.

We are growing this team in the APAC (Asia Pacific) region to strengthen local engineering capability. That includes aligning tools and designs with regional engineering regulations and compliance requirements, accelerating design adoption across APAC markets, and delivering feature customizations that match local product, factory, and field needs while staying tightly coupled with the global Service Engineering organization.

What You’ll Do

  • End-to-end ownership: Own embedded features from requirements and architecture through implementation, bench validation, and integration with tooling hardware.
  • Next-gen tools: Contribute to next-generation service tools system architecture, firmware/software design, and delivery from early prototype to production release.
  • Bring-up & validation: Flash firmware, debug hardware/software interfaces, and validate components so tooling ships with robust, production-quality code.
  • Embedded & automation: Develop MCU firmware for digital, analog, and small power subsystems; write lab/field automation for device control, test sequences, data capture, and operator interfaces.
  • Prototype to field: Wire, rework, and instrument hardware to prove concepts; translate factory and field use cases into software requirements and help diagnose energy product issues with service tooling.

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree path: Working toward a BS or higher in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Schematics & hardware: Comfort reading electrical schematics and wiring diagrams; reason about how firmware maps to PCBA, harnesses, and common analog/power blocks (MOSFETs, op-amps, regulators, gate drivers, sensing, protection).
  • Comm protocols: Experience with digital communication buses (CAN, Ethernet, RS-485, USB, SPI, I2C, or similar).
  • Embedded C/C++: Bare-metal or RTOS experience; write clear, testable firmware.
  • Lab proficiency: Oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, electronic loads, signal generators, and related bring-up/debug tools.
  • Iterate & own problems: Rapidly iterate firmware, scripts, and system behavior as architecture evolves; stay engaged and proactive on hard, ambiguous problems. Preferred Skills:
  • Python & GUI tooling: Scripts for test harnesses, commissioning flows, or operator tools; desktop or web GUI development for service/tooling interfaces (e.g., Python/Qt, Electron, or similar).
  • Machine learning: Coursework or project experience applying ML to signal/data analysis, anomaly detection, predictive diagnostics, or test/result classification for engineering workflows.
  • MCU / control & debug: Microcontrollers and programmable logic (e.g., STM32/NXP/TI; basic FPGA/CPLD); closed-loop control (PID, state machines, fault handling); low-level debug (bootloaders, drivers, ISRs/DMA, JTAG/SWD).
  • Dev workflow: Git and collaborative development; basic CI or automated build/test exposure.
  • Hardware adjacency: PCB/EMC and signal-integrity awareness related to firmware timing (Altium a plus); basic electro-mechanical literacy (connectors, enclosures, actuators, sensors).
  • Domain & APAC: Battery, energy storage, solar, EV, or EV charging background; familiarity with regional standards, localization, or prior engineering work in Asia Pacific markets.
