Job Description

Scoular is looking for a dependable, hands-on Grain Facility Operator to support the daily operation and maintenance of our grain facility. This position is responsible for maintaining the facility, monitoring grain inventory and quality, completing housekeeping, operating equipment, and assisting with corn train unloads.

The facility unloads approximately one to two corn trains per month, with each unload taking approximately 10 hours when operating normally. Between train unloads, the employee will focus on routine equipment maintenance, inspections, housekeeping, grain inventory, and ensuring the facility is ready for the next train.

This position averages approximately 30-40 hours per week, making it a good opportunity for someone looking for part-time work with a consistent set of responsibilities and occasional longer days during train unloads.

Key Responsibilities

Grain Handling & Rail Operations

  • Operate grain-handling equipment during corn train unloads.
  • Monitor conveyors, legs, pits, bins, and other equipment during unloading.
  • Assist with safely and efficiently unloading approximately one corn train per month.
  • Operate a skid loader for facility operations, housekeeping, and material handling.
  • Identify equipment issues and communicate problems to management or maintenance personnel.

Equipment Maintenance

  • Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on grain-handling equipment.
  • Lubricate, adjust, and perform minor repairs as needed.
  • Inspect conveyors, belts, chains, bearings, motors, gearboxes, and related equipment.
  • Identify worn or damaged components before they result in equipment failure.
  • Help coordinate larger repairs or maintenance needs.

Grain Inventory & Quality

  • Monitor grain inventory in the facility's four steel storage bins.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Monitor grain condition and quality.
  • Check grain for signs of spoilage, temperature concerns, moisture issues, or other quality problems.
  • Communicate changes in grain condition or inventory to management.

Housekeeping & Facility Maintenance

  • Complete daily housekeeping throughout the facility.
  • Operate a skid loader to assist with cleanup and material handling.
  • Keep grain-handling areas, pits, equipment, and work areas clean and organized.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and address housekeeping or safety concerns.
  • Assist with general facility maintenance and upkeep.

Qualifications

  • Experience with grain handling, agriculture, industrial equipment, or mechanical systems preferred.
  • Previous skid loader experience preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to operate and maintain grain-handling equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and manage daily responsibilities with limited supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work an extended day when a train is being unloaded.
  • Ability to perform physical work, including climbing, lifting, walking, and working around grain-handling equipment.
  • Valid driver's license.

Qualifications

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical and drug screening
  • Flexibility to work overtime, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat (90-120F), cold (subzero), and high winds (40+ mph).
  • Must be comfortable with climbing ladders, heights, and working in confined spaces
  • Must be able to work in environments with dust and airborne particles, including grain dust
  • Wear required PPE, such as hard hats, safety glasses, and safety footwear.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks, including lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. multiple times per day and standing on hard surfaces for extended periods
  • Experience in a grain facility preferred but not required
