Description

The Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction enforces statewide standards for building construction. The Elevator Inspection Section approves plans, specifications, and issues permits for the installation of all new, altered or relocated elevators freight elevators, escalators, moving walks, dumbwaiters, material lifts, stairway chairlifts, wheelchair lifts, vertical reciprocating conveyors, and other related devices to be installed in public or residential applications. Additionally, inspects and issues certificates of operation on a yearly basis and investigate any incidents or accidents involving elevators, escalators, moving walks, and related equipment.
This position requires a Certification of Competency, which is administered by HBC. HBC will offer the test on October 15, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., at 500 Mero Street, Frankfort, KY 40601. EDUCATION: High School graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Three years' experience as a state Elevator Inspector II OR three years' experience in the construction, installation or maintenance and repair of elevators and their appurtenances.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional education in engineering, engineering technology or related field will substitute on a year for year basis. OR completion of the National Elevator Industry Education Program (NEIEP) OR completion of the National Association of Elevator Contractors Program (NAEC) will substitute for the above experience.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Must hold a certificate of competency as an elevator inspector from the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction, and ASME QEI-1 Certification. https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/chapter.aspx-id= 38087 Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Working Conditions
Frequent travel is required to perform inspections.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
