Position: Elementary Special Education Teacher

Location: Lulu Ross Elementary School

Reports To: Principal/Assistant Principal

Starting Date: October 2026

Position Summary: The Elementary Special Education Teacher provides specialized, standards-based instruction to students with disabilities across core academic areas and may serve in a single teaching placement, co-teaching placement, self-contained placement, or other special education assignment based on student enrollment and programmatic needs. This role includes managing a caseload of students, serving as an active and informed participant in meetings, and contributing to discussions regarding student progress, instructional planning, and support services. The teacher creates a structured, supportive learning environment; collaborates with paraprofessionals, related service providers, and instructional staff; and monitors student progress to support academic and behavioral growth. The position requires ongoing communication with students, families, and colleagues while ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and district policies and alignment with district curriculum and instructional goals.

Qualifications:

• Possess or be eligible for a valid Delaware teaching license and be certified as Elementary Teacher in accordance with 14 Del. C. § 1521
• Special Education Teacher of Students with Disabilities in accordance with 14 Del. C. § 1571 required
• Experience working with students who receive special education services.

• Instruct in reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, and science to pupils using approved curriculum and appropriate learning activities in a self-contained classroom.
• Work collaboratively with paraprofessionals and related service staff to provide comprehensive special education services to students.
• Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district.
• Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
• Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
• Strive to implement by instruction and action the district's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
• Evaluate student progress on a regular basis.
• Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policies and administrative regulations.
• Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and Board policies.
• Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
• Collaborate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives and methods.
• Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students.
• Establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.
• Participate in professional growth activities.
• Additional other duties as assigned.

Terms of Employment: Ten-month (10) full-time employee.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated annually according to the Board's policy on professional personnel evaluation.
