The Traffic Survey Group of the Transportation Mobility and Safety Division is a specialized traffic data collection and analysis group that manages a Traffic Monitoring System (TMS) comprised of a Continuous, Coverage, and Project Count Program for meeting the general traffic data requirements of NCDOT. Traffic monitoring data is used to support, but not limited to, the Traffic monitoring data is used to support, but not limited to, the following: systems planning for urban and rural planning studies, validation of travel demand models, analysis for air quality conformity, project prioritization, traffic forecasting, pavement monitoring, safety analysis, commercial motor vehicle enforcement, research, and is widely used by other state agencies, local governments, and the public for other activities. The Traffic Survey Group is responsible for managing all activities related to developing, planning, processing, analyzing, and reporting required to manage the TMS. Activities associated with meeting this responsibility include designing, managing, planning, collecting, analyzing, and publishing traffic monitoring data.

The primary responsibilities of the Electronics Technician I (ET I) position are maintenance, repair, inspection, and testing of traffic data collection equipment. The position performs basic to moderately complex maintenance activities on portable traffic counters in an Electronics Shop and on site at permanent traffic monitoring equipment located throughout the State. The position performs these activities to support the two functional areas of the Electronic Systems Section, Electronics Shop and Electronics Monitoring Systems. The position monitors contractor activities and inspects contractor work for compliance with specifications of unit contracts. The position supports shop operations including equipment maintenance and testing, management of inventory control, and maintenance of supplies to support field operations. The position is supervised by the Electronic Systems Section Supervisor and will be periodically given assignments under the ET II positions. The ET I will work with volume/classification/speed and weight studies conducted by the Traffic Survey Group in support of FHWA National Heavy Truck Weight study and the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) program. ETI provides technical support to the ET II when requested for special projects. The ET I will perform other duties as assigned.

The Electronics Technician I must be able to legally operate a state vehicle, (), attend meetings, and work with field staff when needed. Ability to travel to monitor contractor activities. Ability to work at the roadside in a wide range of environmental conditions where heavy traffic flows occur. Operate an aerial device for installation and maintenance of various equipment. Must be able to lift and carry 80 pounds and use variety of hand and power tools. Provide site maintenance including cutting, clearing, and trimming of trees and bushes. Framing, digging, trenching, and installing concrete by hand will be required for installing new and existing concrete site pads. Ability to travel anywhere in the State and may require overnight travel, extended periods of time, and unusual work hours.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC09 $41,206.00-$72,113.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Demonstrated ability using Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Demonstrated ability in the detection, diagnosis, and repair of electro-mechanical and electronic equipment using standard and specialized electronic testing equipment.
  • Experience operating an aerial device for installation and maintenance of solar panels and sensing devices.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of physics as applied to electronics including concepts such as capacitance, resistance, and signal processing.
  • Skill in building and configuring electronic devices with various monitoring sensors, data recording equipment, and communication devices into a fully functional system.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
