Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY: Perform repair and maintenance work on electronic control equipment and apparatus as associated with complex machine tools in a fast-paced steel manufacturing environment.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Installation, maintenance and repair of production or processing equipment and perform advanced troubleshooting.
• Use appropriate test instruments to diagnose and locate the trouble and make needed repairs.
• Works from complicated schematic diagrams, drawings and specifications involving complex circuitry.
• Works closely with and coordinates procedures with engineers and mechanics on the installation or relocation of equipment.
• May replace or modify programmable logic controllers (PLC’s).
• Establish work procedures and issuance of instructions to Electronic Technician “B” or helpers.
• Work with general supervision and may provide training to less experienced maintenance staff.
• Supply own tools as directed by supervision
• Report labor and job data accurately.
• Maintain quality, safety and efficiency.
• Maintain clean and neat work area.
• Perform other jobs within the department or plant as required by supervision.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Typically requires 2 years of technical training and 5+ years of related work experience or equivalent. Valid driver’s license required when driving between plants or while driving Company vehicle. Complete Company Electronic Technician test.

WORK EXPERIENCE: Demonstration of superior troubleshooting and technical capabilities as an Electronic Technician “B” is required. Prior experience in a manufacturing environment is desired. Prior industrial electronics experience is required.

SKILLS: A good command of the English language is required, both written and spoken. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required. Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment down to component level. Requires use of special testing instruments such as oscilloscopes, voltmeter, and chart recorders to test circuitry and components. Specific skills include mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical and electronics. Broad technical knowledge of electro-mechanical principles and equipment is preferred. Ability to apply knowledge/experience to new situations. Ability to retain and apply past experiences to current problems. Ability to read and use electrical schematics. Possess and demonstrate mechanical aptitude. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of existing equipment and be able to learn new equipment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to physically perform essential functions of the job. Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 lbs., and occasionally up to 50 lbs. Typically requires standing and walking on a regular basis, and sitting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, crawling, reaching and handling occasionally. Specific vision requirements include depth perception, color vision and peripheral vision.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Occasionally exposed to noise, odors, dust, chemicals, temperature extremes, drafts, vibration, electricity and heights. Hearing protection, safety glasses, and steel-toed shoes with metatarsal protection are required. May require the handling of hazardous waste.
