Are you a tech-savvy problem solver who enjoys a mix of lab work and field challenges? The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for a Traffic Signal Technician to join our Region Two team. In this role, you are the frontline expert for our traffic infrastructure. Your work ensures that commuters, emergency vehicles, and pedestrians stay safe every single day.

Your Core Responsibilities:

  • Systems Innovations: Install, program, and maintain advanced tech, including traffic signals cabinets, Radar/Lidar detection systems, school flashers, and highway lighting.
  • Precision Troubleshooting Respond to field reports to diagnose and repair malfunctioning equipment real-time.
  • Expert Inspections Verify that new and existing installations meet strict safety regulations and technical standards.
  • Specialized Fleet Drive and operate bucket trucks and utilize high-tech calibration tools.
  • Emergency Response A willingness and ability to be on-call and work after hours on a regular basis.

We are looking for someone with a strong electrical foundation and the grit to work in an outdoor environment.

The Essentials:

  • Proximity: You must be able to report to the Region Two office (SLC) within 30minutes.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of professional electrical/electronics experience or related education (or a combination of both).
  • Certification: IMSA Level II certification (or the ability to earn it within 1 year). Complete the UDOT Traffic Signal and ITS Training within six months of hire.
  • Tech Savvy: Proficiency with computers and a solid understanding of traffic signal technology and construction.
  • Driver’s License: A valid Utah license.

Preferences:

  • An Associate’s degree (or higher) in Electrical/Electronic Technology.
  • A Journeyman Electrical License.
  • IMSA Level II or higher certification.
  • 4+ years of combined education and field experience.

This position may be filled as anElectronic Technical Specialist Ifor applicants with less than two years of electrical experience/education and without an IMSA Level II certification. In order to qualify for the underfill, the candidate will:

  • Have the IMSA Level I certification or ability to obtain within one year after hire AND obtain the IMSA Level II within two years. Certification and training provided by UDOT.
  • Be very comfortable and proficient using computers and computer systems.
  • Complete and pass the UDOT Traffic Signal and ITS Training Course within six months of hire.

Supplemental Information

  • This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. Please note: job offers to those who are not currently on the random drug list may be conditional pending drug test results.
  • Working Conditions: Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g., working at great heights of 100 feet, working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, etc.
  • Working Conditions: Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with power voltages up to 600V or hazardous chemicals, near live traffic, etc.
  • Physical Requirements: Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 100 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time, crouching or crawling in restricted areas.
