Job Description

The System Requirements Engineer is responsible for translating business and stakeholder needs into clear, complete, and verifiable technical requirements for electronic tools and embedded software systems. The role involves defining functional and non-functional requirements, documenting system interfaces and boundaries, identifying failure cases, supporting FMEA activities, and leading structured problem-solving with cross-functional stakeholders.

The position works closely with product, software development, testing, supplier, and customer teams to ensure requirements are well understood, traceable, and aligned with product and business needs. The role also contributes to the development, verification, and continuous improvement of electronic tools and associated engineering processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand business, customer, and stakeholder needs and translate them into clear functional and non-functional technical requirements
  • Create, document, review, and maintain System Requirement Specifications (SRS) and Functional Requirement Specifications (FRS)
  • Analyze component and supplier interfaces, including libraries, to identify gaps, dependencies, and requirements for changing product needs.
  • Define system boundaries, interfaces, dependencies, and interactions through boundary diagrams, flow charts, and system-level documentation
  • Identify potential failure cases during requirements development and support the preparation and review of FMEA documents.
  • Establish acceptance criteria and ensure requirements are complete, consistent, testable, and traceable throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Lead structured problem-solving activities with customers, development, testing, and other key stakeholders to resolve technical issues and close knowledge gaps.
  • Investigate electronic tools and software-related problems, identify causal mechanisms, recommend solutions, and document problem resolution.
  • Collaborate with product and software development teams to support the delivery and verification of software features, components, builds, and engineering tools.
  • Support requirements, design, development, testing, and release activities for electronic tools used in the development, service, and manufacturing of Cummins products.
  • Participate in system architecture, requirements, design, and verification discussions and provide technical recommendations.
  • Assess the impact of requirement changes on project scope, schedule, resources, and related system components.
  • Support product verification and validation by ensuring requirements are linked to appropriate test cases and acceptance criteria.
  • Contribute to the improvement of requirements engineering processes, tools, and work practices.
  • Work effectively with global cross-functional teams and take ownership of assigned deliverables to ensure timely completion.
  • Support knowledge sharing and provide guidance to less-experienced engineers and team members as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, Automotive Engineering, or another relevant STEM discipline.
  • Master's degree in a relevant technical discipline is preferred for select roles.
  • Relevant certifications or training in systems engineering, requirements engineering, Agile/SCRUM, or FMEA would be an advantage.

Skills & Experience

  • Prior experience in system requirements engineering, systems engineering, embedded software, electronic tools, or a related technical discipline
  • Strong ability to translate business and customer requirements into detailed technical requirements.
  • Experience creating and maintaining SRS/FRS and requirements documentation
  • Experience with requirements management tools such as Integrity; knowledge of DOORS is an advantage.
  • Experience creating flow charts, system context diagrams, and boundary diagrams using Visio, Microsoft Word, or similar tools.
  • Good understanding of system interfaces, dependencies, functional decomposition, and requirements traceability.
  • Experience identifying failure cases during requirements development and exposure to FMEA methodologies.
  • Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills.
  • Good understanding of software/product development, testing, verification, and validation processes.
  • Knowledge of SCRUM/Agile methodology is an advantage.
  • Experience documenting requirements for mobile platforms such as Android or iOS is preferred.
  • Automotive domain experience, particularly in embedded systems or electronic products, is preferred.
  • Knowledge of PC/mobile software platforms, embedded systems, software lifecycle tools, and configuration/change management is beneficial.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information to diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong ownership, accountability, and ability to work independently in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
  • Good team-player skills with a willingness to learn new applications, products, and technologies.
  • Ability to manage complexity, make sound technical decisions, and deliver quality results within committed timelines.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools is preferred.
