Job Description

The Senior Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, development, integration, calibration, and validation of electronic control systems for Cummins products, with a focus on aftertreatment control systems. This role translates product and customer requirements into software and control system solutions using model-based development methodologies while ensuring robust system performance, product quality, and regulatory compliance. The position provides technical leadership on complex engineering projects, supports continuous improvement of development processes, and collaborates with global cross-functional teams throughout the software development lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement embedded control software for Cummins products using Model-Based Development (MBD) methodologies with MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Translate customer, product, and system requirements into software, control algorithms, and electronic system requirements.
  • Design, develop, calibrate, integrate, and validate aftertreatment control system features and software functions.
  • Develop system models, perform simulations, and evaluate control strategies to optimize product performance, emissions compliance, reliability, and quality.
  • Perform software development activities throughout the complete Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), including requirements analysis, design, implementation, verification, validation, release, and maintenance.
  • Investigate complex electronic and control system issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement robust corrective actions.
  • Develop and execute Design Verification Plans and Reports (DVP&R), calibration plans, and validation activities.
  • Perform Model-in-the-Loop (MIL), Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), ECU-level testing, and support test cell validation activities.
  • Support software integration activities including AUTOSAR or Semi-AUTOSAR compliant ECU architectures and object code integration.
  • Develop and maintain system specifications, technical documentation, calibration data, and engineering records.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Product Engineering, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing, Validation, Calibration, Software, Suppliers, and Customers to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Evaluate simulation, analytical, and physical test results to verify system capability and validate product requirements.
  • Support product issue resolution by conducting troubleshooting, data analysis, and implementing long-term corrective actions.
  • Lead or independently execute complex engineering assignments, subsystem development, or business-critical technical projects.
  • Review engineering deliverables produced by less experienced engineers to ensure compliance with engineering standards, quality, and reusability.
  • Drive continuous improvement of engineering processes, development tools, and best practices.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and knowledge sharing to junior engineers and project teams.
  • Ensure engineering activities comply with Cummins development processes, quality standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, or another relevant STEM discipline.
  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline is preferred for select roles.
  • Ability to obtain licenses required for export control or regulatory compliance, where applicable.
