About the role

The Electrode Manufacturing Technician I plays a key role in the hands-on fabrication and assembly of microelectrode arrays and implantable neural device components within a controlled cleanroom environment. This position is centered on precision, care, and consistency, supporting the production of technologies that advance the field of neural interfaces.

As part of the Electrode Research team at Blackrock Neurotech, this role directly contributes to the quality and reliability of implantable devices that impact patient safety, research outcomes, and long-term product performance. The work performed in this role helps translate cutting-edge research into real-world applications.

The technician collaborates closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Assurance, and Cleanroom Operations, supporting multiple stages of the implant and array assembly process. This is a full-time role based in Salt Lake City, UT.

What you'll do

  • Build acute and chronic microelectrode array implant assemblies in a controlled cleanroom environment
  • Perform detailed assembly work under a microscope, handling very small components with care
  • Complete tasks such as wire bonding, micro-soldering, adhesive application, and precise component placement
  • Follow step-by-step work instructions, procedures, and engineering drawings
  • Inspect work during the build process and perform basic functional checks to ensure quality
  • Accurately document production work in accordance with GMP and ISO/FDA requirements
  • Identify defects or process issues and escalate or support basic troubleshooting
  • Follow cleanroom protocols, including gowning and contamination control
  • Support material preparation, inventory handling, and production setup
  • Work closely with Manufacturing Engineering and Quality teams to support ongoing improvements

How time is typically spent:

  • Majority of time on hands-on precision assembly under a microscope
  • Remaining time split between inspection, documentation, and team collaboration

This is a highly hands-on role with a strong focus on learning precision manufacturing skills while contributing to the production of high-quality implantable devices.

Equipment and Work Environment

You’ll regularly use:

  • Stereo microscopes and precision hand tools
  • Micro-soldering and wire bonding equipment
  • Adhesive dispensing and UV curing systems
  • Cleanroom benches and ESD-safe workstations

The role is based in an ISO-classified cleanroom and requires proper gowning, attention to detail, and adherence to contamination control standards.

You’ll collaborate with:

  • Cleanroom Manufacturing Team Leads
  • Manufacturing Engineers
  • Quality Assurance
  • R&D and Supply Chain teams

Technicians are encouraged to share hands-on feedback that helps improve quality, efficiency, and manufacturability.

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma and/or AA or equivalent
  • 0-1 years experience in electronics and/or medical device manufacturing environment, preferably in clean room setting working with small parts

Ideal Competencies

  • GMP training or experience
  • Thorough and detail oriented
  • Excellent reading, writing and communication skills in the English language
  • Able to work independently with little supervision
  • Able to handle stressful situations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be proficient in computer skills with 2 years’ experience using Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of FDA/ISO for medical devices

Physical and Other Requirements

  • Ability to work extended periods under a microscope.
  • Strong fine motor skills and steady hand coordination.
  • Ability to maintain focus during repetitive precision tasks.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures without deviation.
  • Comfortable working in full cleanroom gowning attire.
  • Ability to lift up to fifty pounds when moving materials or equipment.
