Electrification Business Area Research Manager

Location for the role

Global role with a preference for a location in Europe, an ABB Corporate Research Center location, or a major Electrification R&D site.

This role reports to the Electrification Chief Technology Officer.

Responsibilities

In this role, you create and l ead a high-impact research portfolio across the core technologies relevant for Electrification Business product and service offerings. You will lead research direction and execution by coordinating global resources in the development of new concepts, technologies, technical platforms, and intellectual property.

  • Define strategic research direction together with the Business Lines and CTO and ensures the creation of global technology roadmaps and a high-impact research project portfolio. Coordinate all global research activities.

  • Build a culture of innovation and actively explore relevant new technologies across industries and academia. Facilitate partnering between the Research Centers and Business Lines to ensure business objectives are included in the strategic technology roadmaps.

  • Set project targets, oversee execution of technology roadmaps for the electrification research, and achieve research performance targets. Ensure appropriate project planning, prioritization, and execution of projects in Research Centers.

  • Oversee transfer of technology and knowledge between the Corporate Research Centers (CRC) and internal partners.

  • Maintain effective relationships with global research community, network with universities and innovation partners, and support marketing and promotion activities around research.

  • Manage relevant legal contracts for IP and licensing of technology related to research.

  • Ensure financial planning and budgeting for research. Monitor progress against financial targets and take actions as needed. Manage global resource portfolio. Prepare global resource budget for research. Define and agree resource and skills plan with local CRCs.


Qualifications

  • 15+ years’ experience in Research or R&D and experience in electrical distribution or related industries

  • MS in Engineering discipline required; PhD preferred

  • Familiar with core Electrification technologies: electrical systems, power electronics, switching & protection, intelligent systems

  • Innovative thought leader; outstanding communicator

  • Able to connect research to Division strategic needs

  • Effective project portfolio manager
