Job Description

The Electrical Journeyman II is responsible for obtaining permits, performs electrical work as required by law and performs the full range of technical aspects of the electrical work. Electrical Journeyman III/ Lead Tech functions as a crew leader, overseeing the work of lower-level licensed Electricians, Trades Helpers and performs Journeyman/ master-level electrician assignments. Uses regularly considerable independent judgement in making decisions without the availability of Supervision. Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion is essential to this job.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

1. As Essential Personnel; you are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns and any emergencies including clean up required because of severe weather incidents. Performs snow removal activities as assigned, such as shoveling, salting, etc. Maintenance employees are essential to the overall success of Commencement (May) and Orientation and Move-in (August) weekend events and special events that are scheduled in facilities throughout the year and must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.

2. Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the Electrical Supervisor and/or Building Maintenance Manager.

3. Serves as the licensed electrician on-site at the construction or remodeling project and assists the Electrical Supervisor on other job assignments.

4. Regularly inspects and evaluates electrical and electronic equipment to ensure that it operates efficiently and safely, follows recommended maintenance schedule for cleaning and lubricating equipment, and maintains records on equipment status and maintenance.

5. Studies blueprints and schematics and determines methods, materials, and equipment needed to complete the assignment.

6. Connects wires to plugs, switches, controls, light fixtures, traffic controls, appliances, motors, breaker panels, and switchboards.

7. Splices wires by stripping insulation from wire leads, twisting, clamping, and/or soldering leads together and applying insulating terminal caps using a variety of hand tools; makes underground waterproof splices.

8. Disassembles, repairs and reassembles or replaces defective electrical equipment such as plugs, switches, outlets, controls, ballasts, motors and appliances using hand tools, test equipment, and service manuals.

9. Tests installations to check and ensure continuity of the circuit, and the compatibility and safety of all components using test equipment such as an ohmmeter, amp meter, voltmeter, oscilloscope, or battery buzzer.

10. Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduit, junction, switch, outlet boxes, and switch boards using hand tools and such special equipment as mechanical drills, cutters, benders, and threaders.

11. Cleans and lubricates equipment and maintains records on equipment status and maintenance.

12. Installs, repairs and distributes apparatus, including but not limited to electrical motors, relays, switches, thermostats, circuit breakers, panels, electrical controls, and appliances using electric drills, hand tools and power tools.

13. Install and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, power equipment, and components of machinery and equipment following electrical code, manuals, specifications, schematics, and blueprints.

14. Inspects and evaluates electrical equipment to ensure that it operates efficiently and safely; determines whether equipment and new installations meet requirement of the National Electrical Code.

15. Pulls wire through conduit.

16. Determines materials needed for most frequently occurring repair work, prepares requisitions, and monitors inventory.

17. Cleans and maintains tools and performs routine maintenance on special equipment used in electrician's work

18. May assist in training lower-level apprentice Electricians and others.

19. Diagnose and resolve problems in electrical circuits, systems, and equipment using testing instruments and equipment.

20. Repair or recommend replacement of electrical appliances, including commercial ovens, ranges, steam tables, washers, dryers, etc.

21.Receive and complete work orders. Maintains accurate records on material and labor used.

22. Respond to emergency calls as needed.

23. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures. Ensures that equipment is in safe operating condition.

24. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.

25. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.

26. Trims-out electrical panels.

27. Familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures of the Electrical field.

28. Knowledge of the tools of the electrical trade.

29. Relies on experience and judgement to plan accomplish goals.

30. Performs other duties as assigned.

31. Must provide own hand tools to perform and complete trade related tasks.

32. Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks.

33. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.

Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies

High school diploma or GED Valid Virginia Master Electricians License Card required. State Driver’s license and insurable with company’s agent. Approximately 8+ years of related experience required or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to understand and follow instructions, and work under limited supervision. Must be able to work well with the public and co-workers and present a positive attitude. Proven, excellent leadership skill, initiative, and competency is required. Exceptional self-management. Desire to work with a team to accomplish goals. Urgency to grow and improve. Proficient knowledge and excellent computer skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access). Clean and professional appearance. Must be courteous, detailed oriented. Self-motivated, diligent, trustworthy, possess strong organizational and planning skills and well-developed communication skills. Must be able to lift up to 50+ pounds and perform duties of Electrical trade in typical Virginia Climate. This position might require the use of and operation of aerial lifts or be willing and able to obtain aerial lift certifications, operate, and work from various aerial lifts and heights. Certifications obtained while employed by Liberty University at the expense of the employer will be reimbursed back to the University upon voluntary termination (resignation) for the first 12 months after acquiring it. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required. Must be able to work on weekends, holidays, and flexible daily/evening hours.

Compensation is determined based on factors such as qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, along with University needs and external market conditions. Market benchmarks may be used, as appropriate, in combination with internal equity to ensure pay is fair and aligned with the broader compensation structure.

The position may also be eligible for comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and tuition assistance.
