Summary

Position Overview:

The Electrician III plays a critical frontline leadership role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of our electrical infrastructure. Reporting directly to the Electrical Supervisor, this hands-on position bridges the gap between management and technical execution.

The role will co-lead a team of electricians, coordinate daily maintenance activities, and troubleshoot complex electrical issues. This role requires a strong blend of technical expertise, a deep commitment to safety regulations, and emerging leadership skills to mentor junior staff and drive operational excellence.

Job Duties:

• Assign daily tasks: Hand out work orders based on project priorities and individual team strengths.
• Evaluate performance: Provide honest feedback to team members to support their career growth.
• Plan work schedules: Organize routine checkups on equipment to prevent unexpected breakdowns.
• Manage resources: Track inventory to ensure parts, tools, and safety gear are always available.
• Oversee contractors: Supervise external technicians brought in for specialized project work.
• Keep records: Maintain accurate logs of completed repairs, equipment history, and system changes.
• Solve complex problems: Diagnose tricky faults in power distribution, control panels, and automation systems.
• Read technical prints: Interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics to guide difficult repairs.
• Improve reliability: Study recurring equipment failures and create permanent fixes to reduce downtime.
• Support upgrades: Assist in designing and installing new electrical infrastructure.
• Enforce safety rules: Ensure all work follows local electrical codes, OSHA guidelines, and company safety rules.
• Lead safety meetings: Run regular toolbox talks to discuss hazard awareness and safe work practices.
• Audit work sites: Inspect active job sites to confirm proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Manage Lockout/Tagout (LOTO): Oversee energy isolation procedures to guarantee a zero-harm workplace.

Examples of duties

Education:

• High school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency.

License:

• A current State Journeyman Electrician's license is required.
• A valid Texas Driver’s License and a good driving record.

Experience:

• Five (5) years as a Journeyman Electrician in industrial or commercial environments.
• Two (2) years in a lead technician, crew lead, or foreman role.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs)

• Knowledge of all tools, equipment, techniques, terminology, and materials of the electrical trade, to include cost of
• materials.
• Knowledge of hazards and safety procedures and equipment as they apply to the electrical trade.
• Skill in operating equipment used in the electrical trade, to include forklifts, versa-lifts, and high rangers.
• Ability to work under minimal supervision.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
• Ability to make decisions and prioritize assignments.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Ability to read plans and blueprints.
• Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
• Working conditions are primarily in a shop or construction site environment, with frequent exposure to high voltage, dust, noise, and dangerous equipment and materials

Emergency Deployment & Continuity of Operations Requirement:

In accordance with Harris County’s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) Policy, this position is subject to emergency response and deployment protocols. The employee may be designated as supporting a Mission Essential Function (MEF) and must:

• Participate in the classification process of departmental staff based on MEF responsibilities.
• Be available for temporary deployment to an alternative work location, role, or telework assignment during emergency events.
• Confirm work assignments with their supervisor prior to reporting to any worksite during such events.
• Remain flexible in assuming alternative duties as directed to support County operations continuity.

Qualifications

Education:

• Possession of a TDLR Master Electrician License is strongly preferred.

Experience:

• Seven (7) years as a Journeyman Electrician in industrial or commercial environments.
• Four (4) years in a lead technician, crew lead, or foreman role.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs):

• Strong working knowledge of current NEC regulations and compliance standards.

Supplemental information

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

Full-Time | Regular | 40 hours per week.

Subject to early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays at times, depending upon the project or workload.

Salary: Commensurate with experience, based on 26 pay periods.

Physical Demands and Environmental Exposure:

May be required to work extended work hours during activation of disaster recovery operations for an unspecified length of time (varies based on the extent of the event).

This position requires working on ladders and scaffolding; regularly standing, sitting, stretching, bending, stooping, and climbing; and frequently lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs. of equipment, supplies, and tools. Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions and may include environments without air conditioning or heating. This position requires working in confined or awkward spaces with mechanical tools, electrical equipment, and other related equipment and may involve exposure to dust, dirt, paint fumes, and other environmental conditions.
