Job Description

The Electrical Technician V is a senior-level position that represents the pinnacle of expertise in the field of electrical technology. Professionals at this level possess extensive experience and knowledge, often specializing in complex and specialized areas of electrical systems and technologies. They take on critical responsibilities, including overseeing major projects, providing expert guidance, and ensuring the highest levels of electrical system performance and safety.

Position Responsibilities

  • Advanced Electrical Maintenance: Perform highly advanced maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work on intricate and specialized electrical systems, machinery, and equipment. Diagnose and resolve complex electrical issues efficiently.

  • Project Leadership: Lead and manage major electrical projects of significant scope and complexity, from initial planning and design to execution, commissioning, and ongoing optimization. Oversee project teams, allocate resources, and ensure projects meet all objectives.

  • Technical Expertise: Possess in-depth expertise in specific electrical technologies or systems, such as high-voltage systems, renewable energy systems, advanced automation and controls, or specialized instrumentation. Continuously explore emerging technologies and trends in the electrical field.

  • Control Systems Mastery: Demonstrate advanced proficiency in working with sophisticated control systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCS), and advanced automation platforms. Conduct programming, troubleshooting, and optimization tasks at the highest level.

  • Equipment Upgrades and Optimization: Plan, lead, and implement major upgrades and enhancements to electrical systems and equipment to achieve peak efficiency, reliability, and safety. Provide expert guidance on capital improvement projects.

  • Maintenance Strategy and Reliability: Develop and execute complex and highly effective maintenance strategies, including predictive and condition-based maintenance, to minimize downtime and optimize maintenance costs. Oversee reliability-centered maintenance programs.

  • Safety Leadership: Serve as a safety authority within the organization, ensuring that all electrical maintenance activities strictly adhere to the most stringent safety protocols and guidelines. Foster a culture of unwavering commitment to safety.

  • Documentation and Analytics: Maintain meticulous records of maintenance activities, equipment history, and inventory management. Leverage advanced analytics to extract valuable insights for continual improvement and decision-making.

  • Mentorship and Training: Act as a mentor and educator, providing guidance, training, and knowledge-sharing to junior technicians, promoting their professional development.

  • Compliance and Regulatory Excellence: Ensure strict compliance with all relevant local, state, and national electrical codes, as well as safety regulations. Lead and actively participate in regulatory inspections and audits.

  • Research and Innovation: Engage in cutting-edge research and innovation in the electrical field, exploring novel technologies and methodologies that can enhance electrical system performance and sustainability.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent. An associate degree or higher in electrical technology or a related field is typically preferred.

  • Extensive Experience: A minimum of 15 or more years of hands-on experience in electrical maintenance, troubleshooting, project management, or a specialized area of electrical technology, with a track record of excellence.

  • Specialized Expertise: In-depth knowledge and specialization in a specific area of electrical technology or systems, often accompanied by relevant certifications or licenses.

  • Project Management Excellence: Demonstrated ability to successfully lead and manage highly complex and large-scale electrical projects, with a strong history of delivering projects on time and within budget.

  • Innovative Problem-Solving: Exceptional problem-solving skills, with a history of developing inventive solutions to intricate and challenging electrical issues.

  • Leadership and Communication: Outstanding leadership qualities and effective communication abilities, including mentorship and guidance to junior technicians and teams.

  • Safety Champion: A steadfast commitment to safety, with a proven record of fostering a culture of safety throughout the organization.

  • Physical Fitness: The capability to work in diverse and challenging conditions, including heights, confined spaces, and the handling of heavy equipment.

  • Certifications: Master Electrician license, specialized technology certifications, or industry-specific designations, is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Electrical Maintenance Technicians V must be physically fit and capable of performing tasks that may include standing for extended periods, bending, and lifting objects.

  • Must exercise caution when working with electrical systems to minimize the risk of injury.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. as required.

Work Environment

ElectricalMaintenance Technician V may work regular business hours but might be required to be on-call for emergencies or work in shifts, depending on the organization's needs.

Market Growth, Economic Stimulus

In April 2017, ARAUCO conducted groundbreaking ceremonies in Grayling, Michigan, marking the official start of the construction phase for what will become the most modern particleboard plant in North America, and the largest of its kind globally. Slated for completion in late 2018, the plant will feature North America’s largest single continuous particleboard press (170 ft.) and will be one of the most productive in the world.

The plant location will improve the logistics of the entire chain of production, and support anticipated customer growth in the Midwest. In addition, ARAUCO anticipates the Grayling operations will create 700 construction jobs, 200 direct jobs at the plant; and one to two support jobs locally for every direct job.
