Objective

The purpose of this position is to issue violation notices and prepare inspection reports, discuss inspections and code interpretations with the public and, inspect electrical installations in residential and commercial structures year-round to enforce compliance with electrical codes, regulations and ordinances.

This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Examples of duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

• Submits reports of inspections and investigations and recommends corrective actions.

• Collects and properly documents evidence of violations.

• Performs inspections to enforce electrical code and electrical permit regulations and ordinances.

• Inspects electrical sites to assure proper operation of equipment and installations, determines reasons for malfunction and performs tests utilizing amp meters and volt probes to determine compliance with standards.

• Issues warnings and violations to citizens and businesses and serves citations regarding violations of electrical and safety codes.

• Authorizes the utility company to begin or resume electrical service.

• Discusses inspections, investigations and code interpretations with the public, electricians, engineers, builders and business officials to resolve code violations and problems.

• Prepares reports of findings, and compiles evidence should legal action be taken.

• Testifies in court and at public hearings.

• Performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent

• Must possess a current Kentucky Master Electrician License obtained through examination and be engaged in the profession in that capacity immediately preceding application.

OR

• Must have eight (8) years of experience immediately preceding application in the electrical trade and pass testing per 815 KAR 35:015.

OR

• Be a registered electrical engineer and engaged in that profession for at least three (3) years immediately preceding application.

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA.

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

• Must be certified as an Electrical Inspector General in the State of Kentucky (815 KAR 35:015) within four (4) months of employment.

• Must maintain 24-hour on-call availability.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

• Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.

• Sufficient vision is needed to review detailed plans and blueprints, and to inspect buildings.

• Sufficient mobility is needed to conduct inspections at locations with limited or difficult access.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

• Involves routine and frequent exposure to:

  • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.

  • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.

  • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.

  • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.

  • Traffic; Moving machinery.

  • Electrical shock; Heights.
