Electrical Engineering Trainer/Assessor
Application Deadline: 17 July 2026
Department: Construction & Engineering Apprenticeships
Employment Type: Part Time
Location: Wigan & Leigh College
Compensation: £17,196 - £21,042 / year
22.2 Hours per Week, Permanent
You know what good electrical engineering looks like. Now help apprentices prove it.
An apprenticeship is built in the workplace.
It is where apprentices apply their knowledge, develop professional habits and build the evidence that shows they are ready for the next stage.
As our Electrical Engineering Assessor, you’ll support apprentices in college and with employers, helping them make progress towards Gateway and End Point Assessment. You’ll review evidence, carry out workplace assessments, complete progress reviews and give clear feedback that helps apprentices understand what they need to do next.
This role is about more than checking paperwork. You’ll help apprentices connect what they learn with what they do at work. You’ll support employers to understand apprenticeship requirements and help make sure learners are developing the right knowledge, skills and behaviours.
You may already be an experienced assessor. You may be an electrical engineering professional looking to move from industry into education. If you have strong industry experience and want to help develop the next generation of engineers, we can support you to gain the assessing and teaching qualifications required for the role.
What you'll do
- Support electrical engineering apprentices in college and the workplace.
- Carry out progress reviews with apprentices and employers.
- Assess workplace evidence through observations, professional discussions and portfolio reviews.
- Help apprentices prepare for Gateway and End Point Assessment.
- Set clear targets and provide feedback that supports progress.
- Maintain accurate records using OneFile and other college systems.
- Identify apprentices who need additional support and act early.
- Work with employers to create opportunities for apprentices to develop competence.
- Support quality assurance, standardisation and audit activity.
- Keep your electrical engineering knowledge current and connected to industry practice.
What you'll bring
- A recognised qualification in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Relevant industry experience within electrical engineering.
- An assessor qualification, or willingness to achieve one with our support.
- Strong knowledge of safe working practice in engineering environments.
- The ability to coach, mentor or support others to develop.
- Confidence working with employers and workplace mentors.
- Good organisation and accurate record keeping.
- Confidence using digital systems, or willingness to learn.
- Understanding of apprenticeships, Gateway, EPA or vocational assessment would be helpful, but we can support you to develop this knowledge.
What you’re like
- Industry credible. You know electrical engineering and understand workplace standards.
- Supportive. You help apprentices build confidence without lowering expectations.
- Clear. You explain evidence, progress and next steps in plain English.
- Organised. You keep reviews, records, visits and actions on track.
- Practical. You connect assessment requirements to real workplace activity.
- Detail-focused. You understand that accurate evidence and records matter.
- Employer-facing. You build positive relationships with employers and mentors.
- Development-focused. You want apprentices to grow into skilled, professional engineers.
Essentials
- You’ll need an enhanced DBS check. If you get the job, we’ll do this for you.
- You’re committed to safeguarding and inclusion.
- You can travel across college sites and employer locations.
- You’re flexible and happy to work beyond standard hours when needed to support apprentices, employers or college activity.
- You’re willing to gain role-related assessing or teaching qualifications if you do not already hold them.
Why work for us
Electrical engineering apprentices need more than technical knowledge.
They need to understand standards, safety, evidence, professional behaviours and what it takes to prove competence in the workplace. They need someone who can guide them through the apprenticeship journey and help them prepare for Gateway and End Point Assessment with confidence.
At Wigan & Leigh College, you’ll help make that happen.
You’ll work with apprentices, employers and colleagues across engineering and apprenticeships, supporting learners to connect workplace experience with assessment requirements. You’ll see the difference your feedback makes as apprentices improve, build stronger evidence and move closer to completion.
You’ll also have the chance to bring your industry knowledge into education. We value people who understand the realities of electrical engineering and want to help others develop. If you’re moving from industry into an assessing role, we’ll support you to build the qualifications and confidence you need.
This is a role for someone who is practical, organised and committed to high standards. Someone who wants apprentices to succeed and understands that assessment, done well, is part of learning.
