Electrical Engineer
The Electrical Engineer is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing substation projects from initiation to completion. The role requires technical expertise in electrical engineering, leadership skills, and the ability to ensure timely delivery within budget while maintaining compliance with safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities:
- Lead, plan, and manage the end-to-end execution of substation and solar power projects, from design through commissioning.
- Oversee the construction, installation, and upgrading of electrical substations, including transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and control equipment.
- Supervise project teams, contractors, and suppliers to ensure smooth execution of substation and solar site activities.
- Develop detailed project schedules, allocate resources, and monitor progress to ensure timely delivery of substation projects.
- Ensure compliance with electrical safety standards, grid codes, and regulatory requirements related to substation operations and renewable energy systems.
- Oversee testing, commissioning, and energisation of substations and associated electrical infrastructure.
- Manage project budgets, track costs, and ensure financial efficiency and profitability of substation projects.
- Prepare and present regular project status reports, including technical and financial updates, to management.
- Identify project risks (technical, safety, and operational) in substation and solar installations and implement effective mitigation strategies.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams including engineering, procurement, operations, and utility stakeholders for seamless substation integration and project execution.
Candidate profile:
- NVQ Level 5/6 or a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in electrical engineering projects (preferably substation and/or renewable energy) with a Bachelor’s Degree, or 10 years of hands-on experience with an NVQ Level 5/6 qualification.
- Proven experience in substation design, installation, testing, and commissioning, with knowledge of transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and grid integration.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to supervise multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and stakeholders effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, execute, and deliver projects within scope, budget, and timelines while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Solid understanding of electrical safety standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices, particularly related to substations and power systems.
- Experience in budget management, cost control, and resource allocation to ensure project profitability and efficiency.
- Excellent communication, reporting, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to coordinate with cross-functional teams and present updates to senior management.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify risks and implement practical mitigation strategies.
