POSITION OVERVIEW

DeVita & Associates, Inc. (DEVITA) is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join its Charlotte, North Carolina branch office.

Due to increasing workload, DEVITA is looking for a technically strong electrical engineering professional with a passion for excellence, a take-charge attitude, and the ability to independently lead electrical design efforts on building projects.

The Electrical Engineer will be responsible for designing and coordinating electrical building systems across commercial, institutional, industrial, healthcare, and multifamily projects. This position will work closely with clients, contractors, code officials, utility companies, project managers, architects, designers, and other engineering disciplines to deliver coordinated, code-compliant project solutions.

The ideal candidate is a Professional Engineer who can independently manage electrical design responsibilities, lead project coordination, supervise electrical designers, and communicate technical requirements effectively with both internal and external project stakeholders.

WHO THIS POSITION IS BEST FOR

This position is best suited for an experienced electrical engineer who is comfortable taking ownership of building-system design and coordinating technical requirements across multiple disciplines.

The ideal candidate can independently attend project meetings, present technical information, lead the electrical design effort for assigned projects, supervise electrical designers, and make sound engineering decisions with minimal supervision.

A strong understanding of electrical codes, building systems, power distribution, lighting, fire alarm design, and construction administration is important to success in this role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design electrical systems for commercial, institutional, industrial, healthcare, and multifamily projects.
  • Design AC power distribution, interior and exterior lighting, fire alarm, and other building support systems.
  • Lead the electrical design effort for assigned projects with minimal supervision.
  • Supervise and check the work of Electrical Designers assigned to project teams.
  • Coordinate technical project requirements with clients, contractors, code officials, utility companies, project managers, designers, and other disciplines.
  • Prepare and review electrical engineering calculations, including photometrics, voltage drop, fault current, power, and current calculations.
  • Design power distribution systems, including panelboards, switchboards, overcurrent protection, transformers, disconnect switches, conductors, raceways, and wiring devices.
  • Design systems incorporating generators and other electrical equipment as required.
  • Research equipment types, manufacturers, resources, and electrical system requirements.
  • Perform interior and exterior lighting design using ElumTools, Lithonia Visual, or similar lighting software.
  • Perform energy-code compliance analysis and calculations.
  • Perform fire alarm design.
  • Seal drawings in jurisdictions where appropriately licensed.
  • Conduct due-diligence field work to gather information required for design.
  • Prepare and edit specifications using CSI MasterFormat standards.
  • Review product submittals and shop drawings.
  • Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Inspect projects at various stages of construction.
  • Prepare field reports and support construction administration activities.
  • Apply applicable electrical and building codes and standards throughout design and construction.
  • Communicate project requirements and technical solutions clearly to project stakeholders.
  • Independently attend project meetings and present specific aspects of engineering assignments.
  • Coordinate electrical work with other project disciplines to maintain project quality and schedule.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience designing electrical systems for commercial, institutional, industrial, healthcare, and/or multifamily projects.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET/EAC-accredited program.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure required.
  • Multistate eligibility required.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical building systems and their components.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including:
  • National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • NFPA 101 Life Safety Code
  • NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm Code
  • Building codes
  • Energy codes
  • Experience with electrical calculations, power distribution, lighting, and fire alarm systems.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lead electrical design efforts with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Revit MEP is a plus.
  • Experience with SKM or similar electrical modeling software is a plus.
  • Project management experience is a plus.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

The successful candidate should demonstrate experience with:

Electrical Design: AC power distribution, power calculations, lighting, fire alarm, generators, transformers, panelboards, switchboards, raceways, wiring devices, and electrical equipment.

Engineering Calculations: Photometrics, voltage drop, fault current, power, current, energy-code compliance, and related electrical calculations.

Building Codes: NEC, NFPA 101, NFPA 72, applicable building codes, and energy codes.

Construction Administration: Submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, field inspections, field reports, and construction coordination.

Documentation: CSI MasterFormat specifications, AutoCAD, Revit MEP, and electrical modeling software.
