Job Description

Leidos is looking to fill the Electrical Engineer position, who will serve as a member of the Leidos, Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) assigned to the Facilities – Engineering & Design Team. The Electrical Engineer will execute electrical designs ranging from small, single year projects to multi-year government projects in extreme winter environments for three (3) Antarctic stations plus additional field camps. The mission support program is currently in the early stages of a planned 10-year upgrade program to transform one station, in addition undertake planned projects to upgrade and sustain other existing stations, facilities, infrastructure and services at all locations of the program. The Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) program team is based in Centennial, Colorado and funded by the United States National Science Foundation (NSF).

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for working as part of the Engineering team designing and coordinating safe, technically accurate, and cost effective power distribution and electrical systems designs and deliverables for station facilities and lodging.

Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Applies knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the preparation of engineering deliverables that comply with applicable codes, standards, and specifications. Utilize engineering technology to accomplish work and continuously improve work processes to meet program needs.

*** Deployment to Antarctica may be required in this role. IF this role deploys, deployment length is expected to be for 3-8 weeks. The candidate in the position must complete the physical and dental examinations required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. ***

Other than the deployment period, this position will allow 100% remote work.

The anticipated salary range for this role will be $100,000 to $120,000 annually.


Due to contract requirements, US Citizenship is required.


Must obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to start date. This process could take up to 4 months.

About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF’s Office of Polar Program’s Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:

  • Vision: Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.

  • Mission: To provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines. The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

The Challenge:

  • Take general direction from engineering support team lead and work with other technical disciplines and operational clients in a team environment.

  • Lead the design of MV/LV power distribution systems, including power generation, microgrids, and renewable energy integration.

  • Serve as the Engineer of Record (PE) for electrical discipline project submittals and technical reviews.

  • Supports communication between the engineering team, design team, and program team members to assure quality of work, and that consistent technical drawing / design packages are maintained.

  • Execute to schedule requirements while maintaining a high degree of quality in work product, and meeting project goals.

  • Apply industry-standard design means and methods to produce construction-ready documentation.

  • Develop electrical sizing calculations of overall electrical system including equipment and cables.

  • Define specification and selection of all electrical equipment to meet the performance criteria.

  • Integrate packaged equipment into overall system design.

  • Support development of detailed design drawings including single line diagrams, load lists, Plans, Details, Wiring diagrams, Panel Schedules, and Fabrication Drawings.

  • Apply industry codes and standards (IBC, API, NEC, NFPA, ANSI/IEEE, etc.) to design engineering.

  • Evaluate, not perform, ETAP or SKM third-party risk assessments and studies including short circuit, coordination, and arc flash hazard analyses.

What Sets You Apart:

  • A recognized Bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited college in Electrical Engineering, and at least four (5+) years of experience.

  • Professional licensure in Electrical Engineering.

  • Demonstrated experience with Electrical Engineering principles and procedures, design, guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices, including engineering systems and calculations, statistical analysis, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems.

  • Knowledge of instrumentation controls and automation.

  • Knowledge with hazard analysis programs, such as ETAP and SKM, to be able to ascertain third-party analysis and recommendations

  • Experience in effectively communicating engineering solutions verbally, visually, and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.

You May Also Have:

  • Preferred Electrical Engineering PE, with Power emphasis.

  • Experience with electrical design in extreme cold environments or in remote regions.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft® Excel and Word.

  • Knowledge of CAD design packages including Revit.

  • Ability to present to a varied audience of different knowledge levels and learning styles.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $87,100.00 - $157,450.00
