A little more about your role

WSP Africa's Power & Energy team is looking for an Electrical Draughtsperson with solid experience on Distribution and Transmission design drawings. Bentley MicroStation, AutoCAD and Revit experience is preferable.

In this role, you will focus on substation primary plant design and overhead transmission line designs. Effective communication with engineers and other team members is essential within this role as well as the ability to identify and resolve design issues. Managing multiple drawings, projects, and deadlines with Accuracy is crucial in substation overhead line designs, as errors can have significant consequences. If you are successful, you will work independently and take ownership of tasks. Familiarity with Eskom's (or similar) design standards and best practices for substations.

Responsibilities

  • Creating detailed drawings of the physical arrangement of substation equipment and overhead lines, with voltages of 400/275/132 kV.

  • Drafting and maintaining high-quality drawings for overhead line designs, including tower detailing, plan and profiles, assemblies and conductor clearance diagrams.

  • Developing and maintaining SLD, schematics, overall substation layouts and substation sections and elevations.

  • Creating detailed drawings for primary plant equipment, foundation, trenches, drainage, steel structures, fencing, grounding and earthing systems, lighting, reticulation system, control building, etc.

  • Coordinate Electrical layout drawings with other disciplines (Civil, Structural, Mechanical, etc).

  • Create and modify detailed Substation and overhead line drawings in MicroStation, AutoCAD, or Revit.

  • Create MicroStation Seed file and Masterfile and AutoCAD geolocated reference file.

  • Generation of detailed 2D drawings and 3D models.

  • Maintaining organized records of all Distribution and Transmission drawings, ensuring proper version control and accessibility.

  • Regularly updating drawings based on design changes, site modifications, and other relevant information.

  • Ensuring that all drawings and documentation meet the required quality standards.

  • Collaborating with electrical engineers and other team members to ensure that drawings accurately reflect the design requirements.

  • Understanding and applying relevant electrical design standards, such as IEC, IEEE and Eskom (or similar) standards, when creating drawings.

  • Converting drawings into Bills of Quantities (BOQs), which are used for procurement and cost estimation.

  • Visiting sites to gather information, verify dimensions, and assess the existing infrastructure.

  • Identifying and resolving any discrepancies or issues that arise during the design or construction process.

  • Providing guidance and support to junior drafters or other team members.

  • Adhering to all safety regulations and procedures related to electrical work and site safety.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate

  • Draughting Design Certificate

  • Formal proficiency in MicroStation, AutoCAD and Revit. Mostly AutoCAD

  • An Electrical Engineering Diploma will be an added advantage.

  • 5-7 years of MV and HV Substation and Overhead Line draughting experience.

  • Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical components and architectural integration.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Strong sense of responsibility for continued learning and self-development.

  • Must have strong organizational skills and willing to go the extra mile to ensure deliverables are submitted on time
