Job Description

Power Your Future with Qualus in our T&D business as an Electrical Designer. Reporting to the Engineering Manager- Substations, this position is located in our Calgary, AB or Vancouver, BC offices. This role involves the design of low voltage and high voltage projects from conception to construction. Responsibilities

  • Performing electrical design on 12 kV to 500 kV substation projects from the conceptual design stage through construction.
  • Develop AC & DC low voltage load calculations, battery bank sizing, cable sizing, cable tray sizing, lighting calculations for control building & substation switchyard, one-line & phasing diagrams, control building & switchyard plans, sections, ground grid layouts, grounding details, conduit & cable routing plans, and details.
  • Prepare security & access control design and for buildings including specification.
  • Prepare fire detection & protection design for buildings including specification.
  • Prepare cable schedule and wiring diagrams.
  • Prepare and review drawing lists, engineering documents, specifications, and inspection and testing plans/procedures.
  • Review design documentation with the Owner’s Engineer to ensure the design satisfies the project’s requirements.
  • Review of vendor documents against specifications.
  • Prepare material take-offs for all electrical equipment, as well as ordering materials through the procurement group.
  • Respond to information requests from construction sites and complete project documentation, including as-builts, calculations, and returning data to clients.
  • Travel to site and consulting with internal groups, external contractors, and clients.
  • Enhance and maintain relationships with internal groups as well as external contractors and clients.
  • Ensuring the latest safe practices and methods are integrated into the design.
  • Working within assigned budgets and schedules.

Qualifications

  • Electrical Engineering Technology Degree from a recognized institute or college along with a Canadian Professional Engineering Technology Designation (C.E.T) or the ability to register as a Certified Engineering Technologist.
  • 5-12 years of electrical design experience.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and MicroStation.
  • Experience with lighting design and associated software as Dialux or AGI32.
  • Experience with fire detection & protection design.
  • Experience with security & access control design.
  • Experience with high voltage substation design will be considered an asset.
  • Experience with power system calculation and associated software as ETAP will be considered an asset.
  • Experience with MV cable sizing and associated software as CYMCAP will be considered an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory codes and standards, including CSA, NESC, NFPA, and ANSI / IEEE.
