Expert in design related to HVAC (and preferably HVDC) transformers

The Transformer Electrical Design Manager will provide both technical and people leadership for the transformer electrical design team. This role is responsible for end to end oversight of the electrical design activities, ensuring that the project deliverables meet Quality (Right first time), Delivery, (On Time Delivery) and Cost (On Budget) KPI’s. The Electrical Design Manager will support (with the team) any technical queries or problem solving in the full project lifecycle, including Tendering, supplier, production, FAT & SAT stages. This role will require the candidate to balance both technical expertise and direct leadership.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership & Coordination: Responsible for the leadership of the electrical design team. Coordinate the team to ensure adequate support on all Transformer projects. Provide support, mentor, onboard and guide the team. Challenge the status quo with new ways of working. challenge designs to ensure they meet our quality standards.
  • Design & Engineering Management: Plan design activities, lead internal and external design reviews, and manage the technical risk profile. Coordinate FEA (finite element analysis) to ensure dielectric risk remains low. Benchmark and align with principal engineers to ensure designs are fully approved.
  • Customer Interaction: Discuss and negotiate with customers to ensure engineering documents are approved on time, handling technical queries promptly and accurately.
  • Performance Accountability: Ensure on-time delivery of technical documentation and drawings, manage the design change process, and track success against key project metrics:
    • Right First Time (RFT): Ensuring design deliverables meet quality standards without the need for rework.
    • Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) Reduction: Proactively identifying and eliminating causes of non-conformity to reduce project costs.
    • On-Time Delivery (OTD): Ensuring all engineering milestones and documentation are completed within the project schedule.
    • Budget Adherence: Maintaining strict control over "as tendered," "as designed," and "as built" costs to ensure financial targets are met.
  • Lifecycle Oversight: Support the full project lifecycle, including supplier query management, production coordination, Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), and site commissioning support.
  • Communication: Present and represent the electrical design team at all levels. Present complex technical issues clearly to stakeholders and oversee the preparation of technical reports. Provide the team clear objectives, feedback and lessons learned.

Desired Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Electromechanical Engineering (preferred), Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Technical Background: Strong expertise in transformer engineering. The role is well-suited for experienced Transformer Engineers with people leadership skills looking to transition into leadership/delegation.
  • Technical Skills: Deep understanding of transformer physics and electrical design. FEA Experience either 2D or 3D. Strong awareness of how the electrical design function impacts other functions.
  • Leadership & Coordination: Proven ability to manage budgets, plan activites, lead teams and provide technical direction.
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional communication and presentation skills.
  • Analytical Ability: Strong capability in risk analysis and technical report writing.
