Job Description

Build the Future of Autonomous Systems

SYOS designs and manufactures advanced uncrewed systems across air, land, sea, and subsurface domains. We combine intelligent engineering, AI-driven autonomy, and innovative design to create next-generation vehicles operating in some of the world's most challenging environments.

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer – UAS to support the design, integration and technical assurance of SYOS’s Uncrewed Air Systems.

Working closely with the Air Vehicle Design Lead and our core engineering team in New Zealand, you’ll validate and adapt existing electrical designs for UK production, ensuring aircraft electrical systems, wiring designs and associated technical documentation meet applicable engineering, safety and regulatory requirements.

This is a hands-on technical specialist role involving safety-critical aircraft subsystems, including avionics, communications and Flight Termination Systems (FTS). You’ll contribute to design modifications, system integration, testing and fault investigation, helping ensure our UAS platforms meet demanding performance, safety and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical design validation: Review and validate electrical designs, wiring schematics and technical drawings produced by the New Zealand engineering team, ensuring suitability for UK production and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Integrate safety-critical systems: Support the design and integration of aircraft electrical systems, including avionics, communications, wiring and Flight Termination Systems (FTS), considering operational requirements and emergency fail-safes.
  • Manage engineering changes: Assess, document and implement electrical design modifications and repairs, identifying potential impacts on the Certificate of Design (CofD), airworthiness assessments and relevant approvals.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance: Provide technical assurance and verification evidence demonstrating compliance with applicable UK civil and military aviation requirements, including relevant CAA and MAA frameworks.
  • Test and troubleshoot systems: Conduct and support electrical testing, fault-finding and failure investigations, identifying design issues and implementing appropriate corrective actions.
  • Collaborate across engineering and production: Work with Mechanical, Software, Systems, Production and Procurement teams to resolve integration challenges and ensure electrical designs can be built, tested and maintained effectively.
  • Maintain design assurance and documentation: Produce robust engineering reports, maintain technical records and support configuration control and compliance verification through the Compliance Verification Engineer (CVE).

What We’re Looking For

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Proven experience working with aircraft electronics, avionics or UAS electrical systems within the UK aerospace sector.
  • Experience integrating safety-critical aircraft subsystems, such as avionics, communications and Flight Termination Systems.
  • Strong ability to interpret complex wiring schematics, engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Practical experience in electrical fault-finding, component assembly, system testing and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of engineering change control and how modifications can affect design approvals, airworthiness assessments and certification.
  • Experience working with international engineering teams and validating designs against country-specific regulatory requirements.
  • Familiarity with applicable UK Military Aviation Authority (MAA) requirements, design organisation processes and aviation safety management frameworks.
  • Experience with systems testing, quality assurance methodologies and the preparation of technical documentation.
