Job Description
Requisition Id 16162
The Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls Engineering (EICE) group within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) seeks an Electrical Design Engineer to support research and development (R&D) activities that advance isotope enrichment technologies and stable isotope production. EICE focuses on the application of hardware and software solutions to support a variety of enrichment systems and testbeds with an intent to strengthen Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s leadership in isotope production and enrichment technology innovation.
ESED serves as the national steward for gas centrifuge technology and continues to expand the nation’s stable isotope capabilities. The selected candidate will contribute to the design, fabrication, integration, and verification of EI&C components that support these mission‑critical systems.
Responsibilities:
- Support the design and development of EI&C systems with an emphasis on electrical design, including panel layouts, wiring schematics, cable assemblies, and equipment specifications.
- Perform installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical components such as electrical cabinets, power distribution hardware, circuit boards, embedded control hardware, and industrial sensors/transducers.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, including electrical drawings, schematics, bills of materials, test plans, and work instructions.
- Evaluate electrical hardware options and select components that meet project and system‑level requirements, ensuring compliance with applicable electrical codes and standards (e.g., NEC, NFPA, UL) and verifying appropriate electrical sizing, load ratings, and protection requirements.
- Collaborate with EI&C leadership, project technical leads, and ESED engineering staff to execute work in compliance with quality assurance processes, configuration management requirements, and applicable safety standards.
- Lead small to medium EI&C design work packages, ensuring coordination of electrical design activities, documentation, integration, and verification efforts across assigned project scopes.
- Represent the EI&C Engineering Group in cross-disciplinary design discussions and reviews, ensuring electrical design requirements and constraints are appropriately integrated into broader system concepts.
- Maintain awareness of related process, instrumentation, and mechanical interfaces relevant to EI&C system design.
- Manage assigned tasks independently while coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to meet schedule, scope, and quality objectives.
- Participate in ongoing technical training, professional development, and process improvement activities.
Basic Qualifications:
- BS degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field. An equivalent combination of technical education, training, certifications, and hands-on experience may be considered.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical design and system integration.
- Experience supporting installation, integration, and commissioning of EI&C systems in laboratory or industrial environments, including field validation of work against NEC, NFPA, and UL standards.
- Comprehensive understanding of industrial electrical equipment, instrumentation, and sensor technologies, with demonstrated ability to apply electrical codes/standards and conduct power calculations and load assessments during design development.
- Experience specifying, integrating, and reviewing electrical hardware such as power supplies, protective devices, embedded control equipment, control panel components, and process instrumentation.
- Experience developing electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, electrical enclosures or panels, wiring assemblies, and associated bills of materials.
- Proficiency using CAD tools to produce electrical documentation (e.g., AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks, and SolidWorks Electrical).
- Proven organizational skills, including effective management of task priorities and adaptability to evolving project requirements.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance which requires US Citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with industrial control system architectures, distributed control systems, facility power distribution, and industrial networking, with the ability to apply this knowledge toward EI&C system designs.
- Applied understanding of interfacing subsystems such as vacuum systems, cooling water systems, pneumatic systems, and motor drives, with the ability to interpret electrical impacts and interconnect requirements.
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical, with demonstrated ability to produce high‑quality electrical design packages and contribute to the development of internal drafting standards and design practices.
- Experience evaluating and integrating commercial hardware solutions for PLC/PAC based control systems including familiarity with Allen‑Bradley and National Instruments hardware platforms.
- Experience using PCB design tools (e.g., Altium Designer) to review or contribute to electronic interface boards or custom electrical signal conditioning solutions.
- Familiarity with electrical safety practices and design considerations relevant to laboratory, R&D, or industrial environments (e.g., arc‑flash considerations, grounding/bonding, equipment labeling).
- Experience participating in or leading multidisciplinary design reviews, representing electrical design requirements and constraints.
- Experience working within formal quality assurance programs, including design control, documentation standards, and configuration management.
Special Requirements:
- HSPD-12 PIV badge: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
- Q Clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
