This is highly responsible technical work in planning the City's electric utility system. This position assists the division supervisor in conducting complex studies, analyses, and implementing plans or programs derived from these studies for the electric system. Work is performed with minimal supervision and is evaluated by an administrative superior.
This position is for an Electric Planning Specialist however, it may be filled at the level of an Electric Planning Analyst.

Examples of duties

  • Performs short- and long-term T&D planning studies using appropriate software tools.
  • Develops economical, reliable, and safe solutions to address operational and planning needs of the City's T&D system.
  • Evaluates T&D expansion strategies, including system lines and substations, to support reliable and economical growth.
  • Analyzes complex technical data, identifies trends, and develops actionable solutions.
  • Conducts independent and group research to address T&D power quality and reliability concerns.
  • Participates in or lead special projects related to forecasting and planning.
  • Establishes data collection and reporting procedures to ensure accuracy and data integrity. Prepares mandatory government, state, and city statistical reports relevant to the electric utility.
  • May be required to participate in and/or facilitate training to support departmental or City initiatives and requirements.
  • May be required to work alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
  • Position is designated as Mission Critical.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs tasks related to the utility's Integrated Resource Plan.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS FOR AN ELECTRIC PLANNING ANALYST:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics, Business, Planning, Marketing, Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Two years of experience in electric utility-related work.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR AN ELECTRIC PLANNING SPECIALIST:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics, Business, Planning, Marketing, or a closely related field.
  • Four years of experience in electric utility related planning work.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities and other competencies necessary for success in the target position may be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid telephone number.

Supplemental information

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Models as applied to statistics, econometrics, and planning.
  • Electric T&D planning modeling.
  • The mathematics, economics, and statistics involved in electric utility T&D planning operations operations and/or related activities.
  • Microsoft Office Suite.

ABILITIES:
  • Technical analysis and interpretation

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Sedentary work that involves walking or standing sometimes, exerting up to ten pounds of force regularly, and routine keyboard operations.
  • No significant exposure to environmental hazards.
  • Normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
