The Johnson County Election Office is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Election Specialist.

This position primarily works within the Polling Locations & Workforce Services division and supports a variety of election administration activities related to the coordination of more than 150 polling locations and 5,000 election workers. The main responsibilities include assisting with election worker recruitment, scheduling, and communication. This position serves as the first point of contact for election workers, often assisting workers with scheduling questions and technological issues. The successful applicant is comfortable in a customer service role and is expected to acquire a superior knowledge of the election office's election worker management system to best assist workers. Additional duties include supporting election worker training programs; coordinating polling location logistics; preparing election materials and supplies; and providing customer service and operational support to voters and election workers.

This role requires active involvement in day-to-day election operations, with responsibilities that may vary depending on assignment and election cycle needs. The Election Specialist performs a combination of administrative, technical, and operational tasks to ensure elections are conducted accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures. The position plays a critical role in maintaining continuity, supporting cross-division coordination, and ensuring a consistent and reliable voter experience.

Essential Duties:

  • Election Operations Support: Assists in the preparation and execution of election activities, including early voting and election day operations. Supports operational readiness to ensure polling locations and election processes function effectively.
  • Voter and Candidate Services: Assists with voter registration, record maintenance, candidate filings, and voter inquiries. Provides accurate information and ensures compliance with applicable laws and procedures.
  • Election Worker Coordination: Supports recruitment, assignment, communication, and coordination of election workers. Assists with staffing updates and helps ensure polling locations are adequately staffed.
  • Training Support: Assists in the coordination and delivery of election worker training programs, including preparation of materials, scheduling, and tracking attendance and completion.
  • Logistics and Equipment Support: Assists with preparation, staging, deployment, and retrieval of voting equipment and supplies. Supports warehouse operations and inventory management as assigned.
  • Voting Equipment and Testing Support: Assists with election system preparation, including support for election programming, Logic & Accuracy (L&A) testing, and equipment verification, as assigned.
  • Data Entry and Record Maintenance: Maintains accurate records across systems, including voter data, election worker information, assignments, and operational documentation. Ensures data integrity and completeness.
  • Customer Service and Communication: Serves as a point of contact for voters, candidates, election workers, and internal staff. Responds to inquiries and provides timely, accurate information, escalating issues as needed.
  • Cross-Division Coordination: Works collaboratively across divisions to support election operations, ensuring alignment between workforce, logistics, technology, and voter services.
  • Confidentiality and Discretion: Handles sensitive and confidential information with a high degree of discretion, ensuring appropriate handling and security of information.

Education/Qualification Requirements

Required:

  • Associate’s Degree in the following field(s) of study: Business Administration, Marketing, Public Administration, Communications or relevant field.
  • Two (2) years of experience in election work, public sector service, or relevant field
  • Travel required 5% - 25%
  • May require KS/MO driver’s license, depending on department or agency.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the following field(s) of study: Business Administration, Marketing, Public Administration, Communications or relevant field.
  • Certified Elections Registration Administrator (CERA)
