Department Background

The mission of the Department of Elections (Department) is to provide equitable access to voting and election-related services and to conduct free, fair, and functional elections for the City and County of San Francisco. Department staff work year-round to ensure that every eligible San Franciscan has easy access to safe, barrier-free registration and voting options. The Department also works continuously to improve its elections programs with the goal of making them ever more efficient and responsive to the needs of San Francisco voters.

In preparation for the November 3, 2026, General Election, the Department is seeking applications for seasonal positions of roving Field Election Deputies (FEDs) to provide support to Poll Workers at polling places on Election Day.

FEDs serve from approximately 5:00 a.m. to approximately midnight, first visiting and confirming polling places are set up and opened on time, then monitoring procedural compliance and ensuring poll workers are carrying out their tasks properly and following health and safety protocols. Finally, FEDs assist with polling place closing procedures as needed. Each FED is responsible for a territory of approximately 7 to 10 polling places and is provided with a van. To prepare for Election Day, FEDs must complete several training sessions.

In addition to the above-listed tasks, the person in this position will be responsible for the range of duties assigned to the 1402 job code: 1402-Junior Clerk | City and County of San Francisco

Position Schedule, Requirements, and Work Location

This is a temporary exempt as-needed position. Temporary exempt as-needed employees who have worked more than 1040 hours in any consecutive 12-month period, and whose normal work week at the time of inclusion in the system is not less than 20 hours are eligible for health coverage and retirement benefits. This is a short-term assignment (approximately a total of 20-35 hours), that includes completion of mandatory training sessions and performing FED duties on Election Day. Actual start of training date is contingent upon completion of the onboarding process and the Department’s operational needs. There may be additional elections tasks and projects before, during, and after Election Day.

This position requires applicants to have:

  1. A valid California Driver’s License and a clean DMV record
    1. No more than 2 points within the last 3 years, and no more than 1 point in the last year are allowed
    2. No DUI’s, reckless driving and endangerment within the last 10 years
  2. Regular City driving/ parking experience
  3. Experience driving for extended hours (breaks will be provided)
  4. Ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.

Position Salary: $29.55 to $35.9125 hourly

$61,464 to $74,698 annually

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Six (6) months of clerical experience including preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail.

Substitution: Completion of 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university; OR

Completion of a clerical training program (240 hours); OR

Completion of an approved City and County of San Francisco Clerical Administrative training program.

  1. Ability to track and address numerous high-priority tasks simultaneously with a professional and confident demeanor
  2. Diplomatic and conscientious people-management skills
  3. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  4. Ability to use, or learn how to use, a Smart Phone
  5. Ability to safely drive and park a large vehicle (minivan or SUV)
  6. Commitment to ensuring the following:
  1. Voters are offered materials and assistance that allow them to independently cast a secret ballot free from intimidation
  2. All election laws are upheld, and procedures are consistently followed.
