Job Description

Fayetteville Public Works Commission is seeking an Electric Operations Field Technician I to support the installation, maintenance, and operation of Smart Grid communication systems and field devices that help ensure reliable electric service throughout our community.

This is an excellent opportunity for candidates with electrical or electronic technology experience who are interested in working with SCADA systems, Smart Grid technologies, protective relays, and utility communications infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install and maintain Smart Grid communication systems, including fiber optic and cellular technologies.
  • Assist with installing and maintaining protective relay components on field devices.
  • Perform functional and startup testing for new distribution system additions.
  • Maintain and service SCADA-controlled and monitored equipment.
  • Assist with troubleshooting Smart Grid equipment and communication systems.
  • Support DNP mapping and integration with SCADA, OMS, and DMS platforms.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and system documentation.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical certification in Electrical/Electronic Technology or a related field and 2 years of specialized experience in protective relay installation, maintenance, repair, or testing; OR
  • High school diploma or equivalent and 5 years of specialized experience in protective relay installation, maintenance, repair, or testing; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of electrical theory and utility construction and maintenance practices.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems, communication protocols, and networking concepts.
  • Experience with calibration, instrumentation, and testing equipment.
  • Familiarity with SEL protective relays and communication devices.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain positive working relationships.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License required.
  • Functional Employment Test (FET) required.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
