A Brief Overview

Performs electrocardiograms and rhythm strips. Helps do supportive work for the Respiratory care department, stocking supplies and helping turn equipment around. Helps stock oxygen tanks throughout the health system at the WB campus.

What you will do

  • Performs an electrocardiogram (EKG) on patients' to get a recording of the heart's electrical activity through repeated cardiac cycles and notify the physician if something appears wrong.
  • Explain testing procedures to patient to obtain cooperation and reduce anxiety.
  • Observes the recording of cardiac cycles to get an acceptable tracing for the provider to review and interpret.
  • Monitor patients' comfort and safety during tests, alerting physicians to abnormalities or changes in patient responses.
  • Obtain patient identification prior to performing the EKG.
  • Attach electrodes to the patients' chests, arms, and legs, connect electrodes to leads from the electrocardiogram (EKG) machine, and operate the EKG machine to obtain a reading.
  • Adjust equipment and controls according to physicians' orders or established protocol,(adult, pediatric, transverse, posterior or rhythm strip)
  • Prepare and position patients for testing.
  • Check, test, and maintain EKG equipment, making minor repairs when necessary, to ensure proper operation.
  • Supervise and train other EKG technologists and possibly respiratory and nursing students or nursing staff.

Qualifications:

Qualifications

  • H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Required
  • Prefer medical terminology coursework Preferred
  • Basic Dysrhythmia (60 days post hire) Required
  • Previous EKG experience Preferred
  • Prefer clinical experience in a similar setting/environment Preferred
  • Computer experience Preferred
  • Typing required.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, and their applications.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support & First Aid - American Heart Association within 60 Days
  • Child Abuse Iowa Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 60 Days
  • Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 60 Days
