The Boulder Staff Specialist – Site Lead serves as the designated Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) leader for Illumina’s Boulder site(s), ensuring effective implementation of EHS programs and compliance with applicable regulations. This role partners closely with site and regional leadership to manage risk, drive continuous improvement, and support a strong safety culture across facilities and operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Designated Site EHS Lead - Boulder site(s) to support implementation of EHS programs, processes, training, and systems for all Boulder locations and operations ensuring compliance with applicable laws and support the Illumina EHS mission and strategy.
  • Collaborate with Global EHS team to support the implementation of global EHS strategies, programs, guidelines, policies, processes, systems, tools, training, best practices, and actions.
  • Monitor, interpret and assess existing or emerging EHS laws, regulations, regulatory policy, and industry practices to determine operational and business impacts and develop action plans for further risk management.
  • Active participant on Boulder Leadership Teams, Boulder Emergency Management Team, and Americas (AMR) EHS Leadership Team.
  • Lead and document key EHS business processes such as EHS risk assessments, incident investigations and other occupational safety processes.
  • Responsible for EHSMS initiatives for 45001/14001 readiness
  • Partner and engage with Boulder and regional business partners to measure, analyze, and communicate EHS Key Performance Indicator (KPI) and metrics.
  • Manage the Boulder environmental programs such as hazardous waste management, industrial wastewater, storm water and air emission requirements.
  • Deliver EHS expertise for facilities changes, moves and enhancements in conformance with local building/fire codes.
  • Partner with Human Resources and Risk Management on the collaborative management of the workers compensation program
  • Liaison between Illumina and local regulatory agencies
  • Prepare and deliver training as needed in areas such as, but not limited to, chemical/lab safety, radiation safety, ergonomics, emergency response and life safety.
  • Frequently interact with regional team members and/or functional peer group managers, and customers to lead a cooperative effort among members of diverse project teams.
  • Active recipient of planning initiatives at the Boulder and AMR regional level, execution at site level.
  • Use business expertise to drive accountability and support of removing barriers during execution of initiatives.
  • Responsible for results, including costs, key performance indicator metrics and attainment of long-term regional strategy.
  • Advanced vendor management of routine and proactive processes through monthly performance reviews, quarterly business reviews and real time clear concise feedback to help vendors and consultants realize full potential.
  • Celebrate teams’ successes and provide personalized recognition for the right team behaviors and actions.
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement and lean methodologies with optimum effectiveness.

Requirements:

  • EHS Leadership skills that inspire others to desire and achieve EHS excellence.
  • Solid understanding of applying EHS regulations/standards to a site.

  • Experience building strong partnerships with employees and developing a safety culture that is integrated throughout all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to measure and communicate the business value of safety.
  • Experience in IVD/Med Device/Life Sciences industry is a plus.
  • Effective educator and strong ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
  • Effective leadership, presentation, and persuasion skills
  • Experience working in fast paced and dynamic environment with fast global business growth.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute work among competing priorities.
  • Knowledge of scientific principles and concepts and experience applying to EHS needs.
  • Environmental compliance experience
  • Experience in various lab safety programs including radiation safety and biological safety
  • Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought.
  • Demonstrates and influences integrity among vendors, their peers, and leaders.
  • Demonstrates emotional intelligence and company core leadership values in all aspects of work.

Experience/Education:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years experience; or equivalent experience. 0-5 years of leadership experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or applicable field or equivalent
  • Safety Certification preferred (CSP, CHMM, CIH, etc.)

The estimated base salary range for the EHS Staff Specialist, Environment role based in the United States of America is: $107,700 - $161,500. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. The range reflects long‑term growth in the role; therefore, most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range. Placement depends on experience, skills, location, and internal equity. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
