Position Scope:

The EHS Process Specialist is a technically grounded professional responsible for designing, implementing, and continuously improving Victaulic's safety and environmental management programs, with a specific emphasis on process engineering. This role bridges manufacturing process design and EHS compliance — ensuring safety is engineered into operational systems from inception through execution.

Working at the intersection of engineering and people, the Specialist partners with cross-functional teams including process engineers, plant operations, quality, and organizational development to build a proactive safety culture that reduces risk, drives regulatory compliance, and supports operational excellence across Victaulic's manufacturing environment.

This hands-on, 1-year contract role (with extension potential based on business needs) requires someone equally comfortable analyzing hazards and collaborating with plant leadership. Core responsibilities include developing and maintaining comprehensive EHS management systems, managing injury cases, identifying and controlling workplace hazards, and supporting environmental resource conservation initiatives. Occasional travel is required.

The ideal candidate brings both the engineering rigor to assess process risk and the people skills to influence safety culture — making this role as much about building systems as it is about building trust.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Compliance & Regulations: Ensure adherence to municipal, provincial, and federal EHS regulations. Monitor legislative changes and advise management on required adjustments.
  • Ergonomic Program Leadership: Lead ergonomic assessments, track workplace musculoskeletal risks, and provide recommendations to reduce injury potential.
  • Cross Functional Activities: Collaborate with process and manufacturing engineers to incorporate safety controls into process design, equipment modifications, and capital projects.
  • Hazard Elimination & Reduction: Identify and mitigate engineering-based hazards in machining, casting, assembly, fluid systems, and material handling operations.
  • Evaluate and specify engineering controls, machine guarding, ventilation, interlocks, and energy isolation devices to eliminate or reduce exposure at the source.
  • Digital Documentation: Contribute to developing, reviewing, and maintaining digital work instructions for safety and environmental procedures. Create standardized workflows for program documentation.
  • Program Management: Organize, implement, and maintain EHS programs, policies, and procedures with regular reviews and updates.
  • Risk Assessment: Conduct safety risk assessments and hazard analysis. Identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Training & Development: Develop and deliver EHS training programs to ensure all employees understand safety procedures and protocols.
  • Incident Investigation: Lead incident investigation processes, analyze trends, prepare reports, and provide recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Inspections & Audits: Conduct regular safety inspections of facilities, equipment, and processes. Ensure timely implementation of corrective actions.
  • ISO Management Systems: Develop, implement, and maintain documentation processes supporting ISO management systems.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Work with Sales, HR, Operations, and Facilities to integrate EHS considerations across all organizational activities.

Qualifications:

  • Education:Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Degree or graduate coursework in EHS, industrial hygiene, or process safety is an asset.
  • Experience3+ years of progressive EHS experience in a manufacturing, heavy industrial, or process engineering environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with Process Safety Management (PSM), process hazard analysis, or management of change (MOC) programs.
  • Proven track record of leading incident investigations and driving closure of corrective actions at a systemic level.
  • Practical familiarity with industrial manufacturing processes — machining, casting, welding, fluid power systems, or related — is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of ergonomic risk factors and risk assessment methodologies. Familiarity with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards is an asset.
  • Skills: Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication abilities. Proficient in EHS management software and training delivery.
  • Attributes: Detail-oriented, proactive, and capable of working independently and collaboratively. Strong commitment to safety culture and environmental responsibility.

Working Conditions:

  • Environment: Office-based with regular visits to industrial sites across Canada
  • Physical Demands: Ability to conduct inspections involving standing, walking, climbing, and exposure to various environmental conditions
  • Travel: Occasional travel to company locations for inspections and training

Salary: $70k – 80k (based on experience)
