Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

EHS Leadership & Site Ownership

- Own and lead all Environmental, Health & Safety activities for the Redwood City site
- Serve as the site EHS subject matter expert and primary point of contact for all safety and environmental matters
- Drive a strong safety culture through visible leadership, accountability, and employee engagement
- Provide clear direction, priorities, and support to plant personnel and EHS team members

Safety Programs & Compliance
- Maintain and continuously improve site safety programs, policies, and procedures
- Utilize existing proactive safety tools and implement improvements where needed
- Coordinate behavior-based safety initiatives and ergonomic improvement activities
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local, and company EHS requirements
- Monitor regulatory changes and assess operational impacts and compliance obligations
- Facilitate required EHS training programs to ensure regulatory and company compliance

Environmental Management
- Manage environmental programs and processes related to:
- Hazardous and special waste management
- Water discharge compliance
- Air permitting and environmental reporting
- Ensure all environmental permits, reporting requirements, and compliance obligations are maintained and current
- Coordinate environmental inspections, audits, and corrective actions as required

Incident Management & Risk Reduction
- Manage incident reporting processes and ensure timely investigation and closure of corrective actions
- Participate in incident investigations and root cause analysis activities
- Lead risk assessments and support mitigation planning for operational and process changes
- Manage the Management of Change (MOC) process to ensure risks are properly identified and controlled
- Maintain a strong floor presence as a coach, trainer, and support resource for employees and leaders

Training & Employee Engagement
- Coordinate and deliver EHS training programs across the facility
- Partner with operations, maintenance, engineering, and leadership teams to drive awareness and accountability
- Support employee engagement initiatives focused on safety and continuous improvement
- Reinforce expectations and safe work practices through regular floor interaction and coaching

Documentation, Permits & Contractor Management
- Manage EHS documentation, records retention, permits, and vendor contract administration
- Coordinate issuance and tracking of permits and contractor-related EHS requirements
- Identify when outside consultant support is needed and develop scopes of work as appropriate
- Maintain organized and compliant EHS reporting and recordkeeping systems

Workers Compensation & Business Support

- Provide guidance and support related to workers compensation cases as needed

- Support operational and leadership teams in resolving EHS-related concerns and risks
- Assist leadership in development and execution of site EHS goals and objectives
Budget & Team Leadership
- Manage annual EHS budget and monitor performance against department goals
- Lead and coordinate activities of EHS team members and supporting resources
- Drive accountability and alignment across the organization to support safe and compliant operations

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• BA or BS degree in Engineering, Science, Safety or Environmental.
• 3+ years of progressive experience leading safety and/or environmental management systems.
• Previous experience working in a manufacturing setting.
• Strong knowledge of safety and environmental regulations and the ability to apply such in the manufacturing setting.
• Ability to influence prioritization of activities to maintain compliance and impact EH&S improvement.
• Ability to appropriately interact with regulatory inspectors including accompaniment on inspections and follow-up activities as required.
• Demonstrated ability to utilize strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interface with people at all levels within the organization and outside the organization.
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
• Strong presentation and public speaking skills.
• Excellent computer skills including Excel, Word, Outlook, SharePoint, PowerPoint and other relevant systems.
• Strong sense of urgency in meeting internal and external customer needs.
• Forward looking action oriented team player that works well with cross functional groups.
• Maintain excellent organizational skills.
• Ability to appropriately manage the activities and performance direct reports.
• Knowledge of Lean methodologies.
• Skill in change management and process management.
• Ability to effectively plan, direct and coordinate multiple tasks/projects across different departments and cross functional teams while maintaining excellent organizational skills.
• Ability to build and maintain effective work relationships at all levels both internally and externally.
• Ability to adapt to rapidly changing business circumstance and have the ability to thrive in a constantly changing business environment.
• Ability to drive continuous EH&S improvement and Lean Manufacturing progress.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Primarily office-based with frequent exposure to manufacturing plant environment.
• Ability to type a minimum of 60 wpm accurately.
• Lifting/carrying of 10-25 lbs frequently.
• Requires sitting (70%), standing (15%), and walking (15%); frequent bending, kneeling, or reaching.
• May require occasional climbing of ladders or extended standing during events.
Pay Transparency
Chemelex’s pay scale is based on the expected range of compensation for this job and the employee’s work location. Employee pay within this range will be based on a combination of factors including knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, education, and performance. Where federal, state, or local minimum wage requirements exist, employee pay will comply.
Compensation Range: $107,100 - $198,900
Depending on the position offered, employee may be eligible for other forms of compensation.
