The EHR Technician is responsible for the support of the organization’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. This role serves as the liaison between clinical operations and IT, ensuring the EHR system supports efficient workflows, regulatory compliance, data integrity, and high-quality patient care. The position reports directly to the IT Manager.

Essential Functions: Essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Triages end-user issues and determines if the issue can be resolved at a basic support level or if it needs to be escalated to the EHR Program Manager.
  • Must understand EHR policies, procedures, and workflows, and have a basic understanding of EHR issue resolution.
  • Acquires and maintains a general and clinical knowledge of the client and related software applications.
  • Maintains necessary technology skills to perform typical client-specific First Call Resolution (FCR) tasks, with training, including password resets, troubleshooting, common desktop troubleshooting, etc.
  • Provide on-demand support for issue escalation, problem diagnosis, and liaison functions between end users and support teams.
  • Knowledge Transfer Documentation to ensure continuity of operations and effective handoff to support teams.
  • Issue Resolution Logs and Trend Analyses to track, resolve, and analyze recurring challenges.
  • Basic understanding of healthcare regulatory and compliance (e.g., HIPAA). Skilled in the application of policies and procedures. Foundational Communication - Simple messages communicated orally. May write brief messages and keep simple records. May explain and offer guidance on routine procedures.

HIPAA and Information Security Responsibilities

  • Access, use, and disclose Protected Health Information (PHI) only as necessary to perform assigned job duties.
  • Maintain the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of PHI in accordance with HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules.
  • Comply with all organizational policies related to HIPAA, data privacy, cybersecurity, and acceptable use.
  • Immediately report any suspected or confirmed privacy or security incidents involving PHI.
  • Complete required HIPAA, privacy, and security training within designated timeframes.
  • Use approved systems, tools, and secure access methods when handling sensitive or regulated data.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in information technology, Health Information Management, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience supporting an EHR system in a healthcare environment.
  • Working knowledge of clinical workflows and healthcare operations.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and healthcare compliance requirements.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Thrive EHR.
  • Familiarity with HL7 interfaces and healthcare interoperability standards.
  • Hospital or critical access hospital experience.
