Project Overview:

Mining and Metals:

Increasing production of critical minerals provides key components of clean energy technologies, from wind turbines to batteries. This shift to clean energy—and the need for commodities—is critical to underpinning the energy transition. At Bechtel, our teams extract these vital resources to support net zero in a way which is more sustainable than ever before.

Job Summary:

In this role, you will conduct field investigations and special studies for process/chemical design for a medium size projects or assigments. You will lead the design, development, modification and evaluation of components and processes for projects with specialized or unique requirements. You will apply sound technical judgment, coordinate with project stakeholders, and recommend solutions to complex technical issues to support project scope, schedule, budget, and technical requirements.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Planning and conducting independent Process/Chemical engineering work on medium-sized projects or assignments requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria in support of a global business unit.
  • Leading the design, development, modification, and evaluation of components and processes.
  • Applying relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
  • Interpreting new or specialized regulations, codes, standards, criteria, and performance data.
  • Coordinating and interfacing, as directed, with personnel performing day-to-day technical work.
  • Communicating complex technical issues and recommending solutions to upper management.
  • Developing conceptual designs for Process/Chemical engineering projects or projects with specialized or unique requirements.
  • Leading the development and coordination of Process engineering technical information required for HAZOP, HAZID, and other safety, operability, and process risk assessment workshops.
  • Preparing or overseeing the preparation of discipline estimates and work plans in accordance with project scope, schedule, and budget, and supporting their implementation and performance reporting.
  • Coordinating with clients, as directed, to obtain approval of Process/Chemical aspects of the work.
  • Mentoring Process/Chemical engineering personnel by providing on-the-job training to support their professional development.
  • Conducting or leading special studies involving new Process/Chemical engineering methods, materials, and techniques, as applicable.
  • Leading the development and technical coordination of Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for assigned studies, exercising independent engineering judgment to ensure alignment with the design basis, applicable standards, and project requirements.
  • Performing technical reviews of key Process/Chemical calculations, design documents, technical specifications, and engineering deliverables, applying independent engineering judgment to identify and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Coordinating Process/Chemical interfaces with other engineering disciplines, vendors, and project functions to ensure consistency and technical integration across study deliverables.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in Process/Metallurgical/Chemical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, or international equivalent, and 10–13 years of relevant experience or 14–17 years of relevant work experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of Process/Chemical engineering principles, methods, techniques, procedures, industry practices, and applicable regulations, codes, standards, criteria, and performance data.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate complex technical issues, exercise professional judgment, and develop practical and effective solutions.
  • Proficiency in applying Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, engineering codes, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
  • Knowledge of process design activities, including conceptual design, process calculations, equipment and system evaluation, relief system design, and the development of technical information for safety, operability, and process risk assessment workshops.
  • Advanced knowledge of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), including their development, technical review, and application as key Process engineering deliverables.
  • Ability to perform technical reviews of Process/Chemical calculations, design documents, technical specifications, and engineering deliverables to ensure technical accuracy, consistency, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Experience across all phases of Process engineering studies, including conceptual, scoping, prefeasibility, feasibility, and detailed engineering; experience with process simulation and modeling tools such as METSIM, JKSimMet, SysCAD, or equivalent is desirable.
  • Ability to prepare or oversee discipline estimates and work plans, support project execution, manage competing technical priorities, assess design changes, and recommend actions aligned with project scope, schedule, budget, and objectives.
  • Ability to identify, coordinate, and resolve Process/Chemical interfaces with other engineering disciplines, clients, vendors, and project functions.
  • Ability to work independently, coordinate the technical work of assigned personnel, and provide technical guidance, mentoring, and on-the-job training to less-experienced engineers.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical matters to management, clients, and project stakeholders.
  • Intermediate to advanced English proficiency is required.
