Shift/Workdays and Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00AM - 5:00PM, Sunday 12:00PM - 5:00PM; occasional evenings

The City of Manhattan is accepting applications for an Educator I Gallery Attendant. This position will be responsible for working directly with the visiting public or youth and adult program participants. The primary responsibility will be to provide in-gallery exhibit monitoring and thematic education in support of The Smithsonian’s Sea Monsters Unearthed traveling exhibit. Educators will reflect the mission for the Parks & Recreation Department and uphold each specific division’s mission of continuing education in their respective fields. The selected candidate(s) must be able to attend all in-service training sessions.

The position includes fulltime, daytime hours during the Discovery Center’s regular operating hours (Tuesday – Saturday 10:00AM - 5:00PM and Sunday 12:00PM – 5:00PM) as well as support for additional programs and events after hours and on Mondays. Training may be required prior to exhibit start date.

Job Duties

  • Works directly the visiting public.
  • Implements and provides in-gallery supervision to maintain proper crowd control and assure security of all exhibition components.
  • Assist with the data logging required for gallery exhibits.
  • Leads quality informal education programs on select topics for youth and adult audiences.
  • Assists the Curator of Education, and Education Supervisors in the development of programs that are safe, inclusive, age-appropriate, and fun.
  • Maintain independence and flexibility in program delivery to account for changing conditions and participant needs.
  • Fosters positive interactions with children, youth, and other visiting guests.
  • Performs minor first aid for injuries that may occur during education programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills & Additional Qualifications

  • Must be 16 years or older.

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

  • Previous Experience in customer service roles.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification (Can be obtained through Parks & Recreation).
  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent (if 18 years or older).

  • This is not a KPERS covered position.
  • Applicants must pass drug test.
