The Science Museum works to inspire Virginians to enrich their lives through science. We create compelling and thought-provoking experiences that connect our community with the science all around them.
For almost 50 years, the Science Museum has been curating relevant science stories that are delivered through engaging exhibits, programming, demos, workshops, films, content and more. As we look toward our 50th anniversary as an institution, we’re pushing ourselves to be even more important in our community’s life to elevate science as the answer to our complicated world.
The Science Museum is unlike others in our field. We are a state agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia that benefits from state operating support as well as private funds raised through our Foundations to help support the mission. This support provides operational stability and growth opportunities as we evolve to not only meet the needs of our community, but also increase our impact. Our flagship location in Richmond and our satellite in Danville have reached two straight years of record attendance. The opening of our Northern Virginia campus in 2027 is poised to push annual visitation over 800,000, extending our reach and impact across the Commonwealth as we empower Virginians to see science not just as knowledge, but as a vital tool for shaping a better future.
The opening of the Northern Virginia Science Center is the largest project in the Science Museum’s history. As we prepare to open our doors in spring/summer 2027, we’re seeking an Education Programs Supervisor to bring innovative STEM learning experiences to life.
This is a unique opportunity to lead engaging educational experiences that spark curiosity, encourage discovery and connect learners of all ages with the wonders of science. From gallery experiences, school programs, camps and community outreach to youth and adult learning opportunities, you’ll help shape how visitors explore, learn and engage with STEM.
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Education and Operations, you’ll lead and develop the education team, support the creation and evaluation of curricula and educational resources, coordinate projects, and deliver high-quality programs for Museum guests. You’ll also champion exceptional guest engagement and lead STEM education training for staff and volunteers, while overseeing program budgets, scheduling, staffing, and supplies.
The position will be based in Northern Virginia and we’re anticipating filling the role sometime this November. Training will take place in Richmond, with the candidate expected to spend 2-3 days a week in Richmond from November -January. Telework or other work arrangement will be made for the remaining days each week until the Science Center is fully constructed.
Join us in shaping the future of science education and inspiring the next generation of curious minds! Interested candidates must apply at https://jobs.virginia.gov/.
The position offers a competitive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, FSA, HRA, HSA, life insurance, 457 and pension plan, short and long-term disability and employee assistance program. The Science Museum has a generous paid time off policy, including vacation leave, four days family & personal leave, eight sick days per year and 12 paid holidays.
The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $75,000. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as the candidate's experience and market considerations at the time of offer.
The ideal candidate will possess demonstrated experience in informal science education, developing, delivering, and evaluating hands-on science programs for diverse audiences including K–12 students and the general public. Candidates should demonstrate strong leadership, organizational, project management, problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to supervise staff, manage multiple priorities, build positive relationships, and provide exceptional customer service. The ability to work independently and collaboratively, exercise sound judgment, and maintain confidentiality is essential. Ability to travel between locations, as needed, and a valid driver’s license is required. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

The Commonwealth of Virginia is located in the South Atlantic region of the United States. It was the 10th state to be admitted to the Union on June 25, 1788. Home to approximately 8 million residents, Virginia is the 12th most populous state in the United States. The capital is Richmond, and its most populous city is Virginia Beach.
The narrative history of the Commonwealth of Virginia often begins with the founding of Jamestown in 1607, near what is now modern day Williamsburg, Virginia. Jamestown became the first permanent English settlement in the New World, and the Virginia General Assembly, established on July 30, 1619, is now recognized as the oldest legislative body in the western hemisphere. When Virginia became a royal colony in 1624, the robust tobacco trade that had been developing in Virginia helped establish the American colonies as a powerful economic force. During the American Revolution, Virginia witnessed the final surrender of British forces at Yorktown and later became known as the birthplace of many revolution-era figures and future American presidents, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. To date, 8 United States presidents have been born in Virginia, more than in any other state.
The modern government of Virginia is nearly identical in structure to the federal government, and is divided into 3 branches, these being the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches. The Virginia General Assembly is comprised of the 100-member House of Delegates and the 40-member Senate. A governor and lieutenant governor are elected every 4 years. Governors cannot be elected to or serve consecutive terms. Virginia’s judicial system consists of the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Court of Appeals of Virginia, the Circuit Courts, and the lower General District Courts and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts. Virginia has 13 electoral votes in presidential elections, and possesses 11 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
