The Practicum Advisor (PA) positio nislargely focusedon connecting the learning in EDBE 8P74 Professional Collaborative Communities,to the field of practice by supporting the development of teacher candidates as culturally responsive and competent practitioners. Practicum Advisors (PA), working closely with PIs will implement curriculum and teaching approaches that engage students in conversations on educational inclusion and equity and pedagogy. PAs are expected to be aware of a variety of critical practices relevant to their field/subject area that can support all students, attend to unconscious biases, and encourage inclusivity.

Duties:

The duties and nominal hours for an Education Instructor – Practicum Advisor are established by the employer.The nominal workload includes scheduled contact time with students as well as non-contact time.Duties may include collaboration with associate teachers and principals, meeting students in-person or on-line, marking / grading, attending program meetings and completing mandatory training as required.

  • Become familiar with Brock University policies and adhere to them.

  • Complete required Brock instructor’s online tutorial prior to first class.

  • Complete required Gender and Sexual Violencesupportsfor teacher candidates training.

  • Use a provided Brock email address for all Brock-related communications with teacher candidates and program personnel;

  • Collaborate and co-plan with co-instructor.

  • Effectively deliver all aspects of the course.

  • Manage instructional contact time and non-contact timeaccordingto the requirements outlined in the practicum advisor requirements and Log of Teaching Practice. Due to the nature of this course, flexible work hours areessential

  • Adapt instructional and assessment strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs. 

  • Advise, mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in relation to course concepts/content and Professional Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the OCT;

  • Work collegially and collaboratively with other team instructors, course team lead(s) including attending team meetings and debriefings.

  • Advise, coach,mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in Block 2 Practicumwith reference to the Teacher Education Program Handbook.

  • Respond to associate teacher’s correspondencein a timely manner

  • Participate, aswarranted, in referral procedures as outlined in the Teacher Education Program Handbook.

  • Evaluate teacher candidates during the practicum.

  • Communicate on email to support teacher candidates in Block2;

  • Submit final grades by deadlines. 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experiencePK-12;

  • Master’sdegree or other recognized specialization in the field such as a 3-level specialization;

  • Must hold an active membership in the Ontario College of Teachers

  • Mustbe in good standingwith the OCTat the time of appointment;

  • Demonstrated leadership in curriculum and/or education;

  • Exhibits contemporary knowledge of educational theory and pedagogy including assessment;

  • Knowledge about social justice and equity through anti-racist and anti-oppressive lenses;

  • Experiencefacilitatingchallenging conversations and difficult topics with adult learners;

  • Experience with teacher candidates or other adult learners;

  • Competency in using educational technology and platforms for content creation, coursemanagementand delivery

Members shall not accept any appointment which, taken together with all other appointments at the University, would cause the member to exceed the maximum number of regular hours (i.e., not overtime hours) allowable in a work week under the Employment Standards Act, as amended from time to time.

In addition, an employee is not permitted to teach more than two (2) full credit courses in an academic year (i.e., July 1 to June 30).
