The Education Coordinator assists in the development and implementation of an educational curriculum that meets NYSED standards for preschool and school age students with disabilities. Provides mentoring and training to educational staff; participates in the identification, evaluation and educational placement of students with disabilities.
Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions of Position:
With the assistance of the Director, uses discretion and independent judgment involving the comparison and evaluation of possible courses of conduct. These judgments may affect business operations or have a significant financial impact.
Keep open the lines of communication with their direct supervisor and/or upper administration, as this makes for best business practices.
Identify appropriate educational curricula for preschool students with disabilities.
Oversee appropriate educational curricula for preschool students with disabilities.
Provide orientation, facilitate professional development workshops and ongoing mentoring and training to educational staff in the development and implementation of Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs), classroom design, program implementation and behavior management.
Assist in the development and implementation of a Teacher-Mentor program.
Assist in serving as liaison to NYC Department of Education, District/Regional Offices and NYS Education Department representatives.
Assist in the organization and oversight of the initial and annual review process for students.
Conduct observations and tours of students referred to the program, complete summaries, and assist school district with appropriate placement.
Attend annual reviews if needed.
Assist in the formation of class groupings and staff assignments.
Provide Education orientation amongst hire to review Education policy and procedures.
Participate in the recruitment, identification and hiring of educational staff.
Parent Involvement
Master's degree in education or in a related master's program
New York State Certified Teacher or related field
Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations, including IDEA and the New York State Education Department, DOH and Department of Justice.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel, talk and hear. Walk to and from various locations in the building. May need to stoop, bend, and sometimes lift or push wheelchairs of children being served. Physical intervention techniques may be required to aid the children in challenging moments. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision and ability to focus.
