Guardian Australia is part of Guardian News & Media (GNM), publisher of The Guardian As a leading global progressive media organisation, we are renowned for our pioneering independent journalism and our award-winning digital products.

We have an exciting and rare opportunity at Guardian Australia, and are seeking suitable applicants for the position of editor.

This is the senior editorial leadership role for Guardian Australia and is responsible for defining the editorial vision, tone and priorities. This role leads the journalism team, manages daily coverage, safeguards editorial standards and independence, represents the organisation publicly, and drives strategic growth and innovation.

This is a permanent, full-time position based in Sydney or Melbourne, Australia.

About the role

  • The editor is responsible for setting and delivering the overall editorial vision of Guardian Australia, and leads the strategic direction for all journalism, published by the team, ensuring coverage is impactful, relevant and aligned with the Guardian’s global strategy and audience needs.
  • Leading newsroom operations, the editor oversees senior editors and reporters to maintain high standards of accuracy, fairness and investigative reporting.
  • The editor is a senior representative of Guardian Australia and plays a key role in shaping its reputation and public voice.
  • Working closely with the managing director, the editor is a key partner and decision-maker for the long-term growth of the Guardian Australia business, while safeguarding editorial independence.

About you:

  • You are an experienced senior editorial leader with a strong record of delivering impactful, high-quality journalism in major newsrooms.
  • Deeply committed to ethical reporting and editorial independence, you bring sharp digital expertise, with a clear understanding of audience growth, social, multimedia and product in a news setting.
  • You have led large, complex teams and work seamlessly across editorial, commercial and operational areas, and stay calm under pressure, make sound decisions in a crisis and balance long-term strategy with daily execution.
  • You are thoroughly committed to building inclusive, diverse teams and journalism that reflects the communities we serve.
