Job Description

Editor – Motor Transport

Remote with travel to the Sutton office for meetings as required.
Salary: £50,000 to £60,000, depending on experience and company benefits
Contract: Permanent, full-time

As Editor, you will lead the editorial output of one of the UK’s leading B2B titles for the road transport and logistics industry across print, digital and events. You will be the public face of the brand, building relationships with senior industry figures, readers, customers, sponsors and advertisers while producing authoritative and engaging journalism.

The role combines editorial leadership with a high level of industry engagement. You will interview senior business leaders, chair conferences, webinars and roundtables, represent Motor Transport at industry events, dinners and networking functions, and contribute to podcasts, video and live events.

A key part of the role is the Motor Transport Awards, where you will help shape categories and judging criteria, select judging panels, co-chair judging sessions and oversee shortlist and winner profiles. You will also help host and present the annual ceremony at Grosvenor House in London.

We are looking for an experienced journalist or editor with strong editorial judgement who is also confident, personable and comfortable representing a major industry title. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills, contribute ideas and build your career within a specialist media business.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead the editorial direction and production of Motor Transport across print, digital and other platforms, including planning the forward features programme, commissioning, writing and editing features, leader columns, Viewpoints and other contributed content.

  • Act as the public face of Motor Transport, representing the title at industry events, conferences, dinners, awards and networking functions, while building and maintaining strong relationships with senior figures across the road transport and logistics industry.

  • Develop authoritative and exclusive content by interviewing senior industry figures, attending relevant press events and keeping closely informed about developments across the sector, while maintaining Motor Transport’s editorial independence.

  • Represent Motor Transport across podcasts, video interviews and other media opportunities, and chair sessions at major industry conferences and events, including RTX and the Decarbonisation Summit, as well as sponsored webinars, roundtables and other live or recorded discussions.

  • Play a leading role in the Motor Transport Awards, including developing categories and judging criteria, selecting judging panels, co-chairing judging sessions, overseeing shortlist and winner profiles, and helping to host and present the ceremony on stage at Grosvenor House.

  • Work closely with the production and wider editorial teams on editing, page planning and magazine production, provide cover for the content editor when required, and ensure relevant Motor Transport news is supplied to Commercial Motor for its weekly news pages.

  • Contribute to Road Transport Media’s strategy and the development of its editorial products, events and other initiatives, working closely with colleagues across editorial and events and contributing to other Road Transport Media brands and projects where appropriate.

  • Manage and develop one direct report, providing support and guidance while contributing to a collaborative and high-performing editorial team.

Must-haves:

  • Proven experience as a journalist or editor, with excellent news judgement and an understanding of what makes strong business-to-business journalism.

  • Excellent writing, editing, interviewing and commissioning skills.

  • Strong curiosity and confidence to develop contacts, uncover stories and understand the issues affecting a sector.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the confidence to engage with senior industry figures, readers, customers, sponsors and advertisers.

  • Confidence representing a major industry title professionally at events, dinners, conferences and other external settings.

  • Ability to work independently, manage competing deadlines and maintain high editorial standards.

  • Confidence speaking in front of large audiences and chairing debates, webinars, roundtables and conference sessions.

  • Experience managing and developing others.

Nice-to-haves:

  • Background in road transport or logistics journalism.

  • A track record of working on live events.

  • Familiarity with podcasts, webinars and video.

  • Confidence representing a publication, brand or organisation at industry events and functions.

If you do not meet every requirement but bring transferable skills, sound judgement and fresh thinking, we encourage you to apply.
