Job Description

Alexandria (Sydney HQ) | Full-time

The Local Project is one of the fastest-growing design publications across Australia, New Zealand, and North America. We celebrate extraordinary local design and its global impact through premium print, digital, video, and social content. With over 100 million impressions per month, we’re redefining design media on a global scale. In 2024, we expanded with The Local Production, a full-service creative agency dedicated to elevating brands through strategic storytelling and high-end content creation.

We’re looking for an Editor to join our team and play a central role in shaping our editorial voice and storytelling across print and digital platforms. You’ll commission, edit, and curate world-class design content while supporting the Editor-in-Chief, Aidan Anderson, whilst managing and coaching a small but mighty Editorial team.

What you’ll be working on...

Leadership

  • Commission, edit, and refine both print and digital editorial articles, ensuring they meet our standards and align with The Local Project’s voice.
  • Collaborate closely with the Editor-in-Chief to plan content pipelines, conceptualise book topics, develop features, and evolve our storytelling approach.
  • Manage task and project allocation within the Editorial team.
  • Contribute original writing across feature articles, profiles, and special projects.

Collaboration

  • Oversee the editorial workflow from commissioning through to publication, ensuring quality, consistency, and timeliness.
  • Work closely with the Design, Digital and Production teams to deliver integrated stories that span multiple media formats.
  • Collaborate with the Partnerships team on client content, maintaining editorial integrity while meeting client objectives.
  • Manage relationships with freelance writers, editors, and contributors across regions, fostering a strong creative network.
  • Partner and support our US Editor as we continue to expand our North American presence.

Brand

  • Take a proactive role in shaping the evolution of lifestyle, design, and architecture content across platforms.
  • Uphold consistency and adherence to our established style guide and brand identity.
  • Keep informed of competitor publications and industry trends to identify opportunities and maintain a leading editorial presence.
  • Contribute to the ongoing refinement of editorial strategy, offering insights to improve process and quality.

Operations

  • Build and optimise workflows to deliver content at pace and scale.
  • Oversee budgets and resources, maintain strict control of subcontractor spend.
  • Introduce systems for database management, commissioning and freelancer onboarding.

What you’ll bring...

  • 5-10+ years’ experience in an editorial role within publishing, media, or design/lifestyle content.
  • Demonstrated experience commissioning, editing, and producing high-quality print and digital content.
  • Leadership or mentoring experience with small teams or contributors.
  • Exemplary editing, copywriting, and proofreading skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Collaborative approach and comfort working cross-functionally with creative and commercial teams.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with CMS tools and production workflows.

About The Local Project

The Local Project celebrates extraordinary design across a range of platforms, championing the best from industry leaders and emerging designers alike. After launching in 2016 with a focus on Australian architecture and design, we broadened our scope in 2019 to include New Zealand, and again in 2023 to encompass North America. Our print periodical features three titles – The Local Project, The Commercial Project and The Local Marketplace – and we recently launched our first hardcover book, 10, compiling highlights from our first 10 issues in print.

We are honoured to have been recognised twice at the Mumbrella Publish Awards; in 2022, we were awarded Best Use of Video for our video of James Stockwell Architect’s Bunkeren and in 2023, we were named Publication of the Year. Our hardcover book was also highly commended for Special Edition of the Year.

Our audience is a genuine cross-section of the design community, encompassing design-lovers and industry professionals. As such, we aim to inform, educate and inspire, exploring current questions, ideas and conversations through compelling and informed content. As we continue to grow, cultivating authentic and engaged communities is a vision that remains at our very core.
